I along with other voice actors received this note this week from one of our talent agencies:

Quote:
We've seen a recent spike in clients looking to cast authentically, sometimes with fairly specific specs, and asking us for guidance.

As such, if you identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, differently abled or gendered, lactose intolerant or anything else and you want to share that with us we can be sure to include you in those projects. Just let me know.

Thanks,
XX

ps. We are not interested in debating the merits of authentically casting marginalized roles, if this email does not pertain to you please just delete.

I responded:

Quote:
Funny old world, ain’t it? We’ve been trying to avoid labeling of ourselves and now it’s needed? Oh well.

And I proceeded to tell them how I wished to be "categorized" if I must be.

They went on to say they didn't really want to do it this way but some of their clients made a big deal about getting auditions primarily from authentic members of certain ethnic and gender identities.

Welcome to 2023.

B

I'm always bummed when I see these castings, but... hey. I'm a white male, so lucky me.

Speaking of which, there's a new job posting in the Work forum asking for this very thing -- I thought someone on here could benefit from it since I can't. I was just about to post it when I thought to check out the Chat forum first. Timing!

TTFN!

Right??!!! Acting is playing what you are not, not what you are. Inclusion defeats the purpose if it excludes.

This happened to me 3 times during COVID. Buyers wanted to consider me for gigs because I'm gay. I asked my agent if they were also considering straight actors. They were not, so I passed. Imagine if they swapped the narrative. "We are only considering straight actors." How wrong is that??!! I could not take a job knowing that others were discriminated against.

This country spent a lot of time, effort and sacrifice guaranteeing no one should be discriminated based on race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Quotas by definition prevent someone from opportunity. It is done today in the name of righteousness, but it is really revenge and retribution. And, it is wrong. Judge on merit. Not based on whom one sleeps with.

And if we are going to be consistent with authentic casting, how do we justify the cast of Hamilton? For the record, I justify it because it is an artistic choice. But the concept of authentic casting removes artistic choice.
