Worse than being a guest at a cocktail party full of medical people? A guest at a party full of disc jockeys. At least with doctors you have a fighting chance of knowing what they’re talking about. Radio people tell really inside stories about personalities you’ll never know who worked 1,000 miles away at stations you never listened to.

I must admit I’ve let loose that I do video game voice work. If I run into an under 30 year old and mention which games I’ve done characters for I get several seconds of “wow”. That’s one way to get kicks.

At age 10, while I didn't yet have an adult voice, I was able to mimic the accent and speech patterns of then-President John F. Kennedy. Later, there was Nixon and even sportscaster Howard Cosell. But, I suppose my best VO party trick, one that would be most recognizable today among at least the older VO people, would be my impression of longtime NBC announcer, the late Don Pardo (who, besides Bob Hope, was the only person to have had a lifetime contract with NBC, having signed before there was television).

Tablecloth? Dishes? So you know a buncha rich folks! AWESOME!

I used to work for an American investment management company and the UK Chairman was "a titled gentleman", a Duke. Nice man. During one of our meet n greet corporate events, James, for t'was his name, mentioned holding a shooting party on his estate in Scotland.

"We had an actor chappie and a comedian join us" he said and then talked about something else. Sue my PA told me that he was referring to Harrison Ford and Billy Connolly. The Grouse? Thrilled, obvs.

Billy Connolly… what a treasure he is. There are times I have to turn on the closed captioning to get every word, but so worth it.

i'll bet the duke's idea of a "shooting party" and mine are quite different.

A hip flask full of a rare single malt and Grouse shouting INCOMING! Bit like 1960s Vietnam in Harris Tweed.

I have to disagree with part of your original premise. People at parties do get excited if someone tells them I'm a voiceoverist or if they drag the information out of me (I never volunteer it), but not because they give a rat's ass about me or my career. But there will always be one, or usually more than one, keen to know how they can "break in" to voiceover because, after all, it's only talking, so anyone can do it.

A previous wife in a previous life was a writer, of very good fiction in various styles trying to make the big time, and magazine writing and editing to pay the bills until the big time came. She loathed the usual reaction when telling someone she was a writer.

"Oh, I'm a writer too!"/"What have you written?"
"I've written several chapters of a novel."/"How long have you been working at it?
"Since college, ten years ago. I think it's really good. Could you read what I have and tell me what you think?"

I watched her fend off so many wannabes with stories like that. Quite demoralizing.
