Anyone new to our business or who has been around for a while needs to commit the above to memory. Wanna be famous? Become a Rock Star or a Movie Actor. Wannabe really rich? Become a Tax Lawyer.

Preach it Liz!
When the 'rona hit, and most of my regular clients went radio silent. But, I had an up tick in my telephony jobs. Sure, I was doing nothing but Covid info updates for months which was scary and depressing as all hell, but it was the only thing that kept the lights on here.
I've shared with Liz over the years, I have three goal posts financially each week (I keep things weekly because I have such a wee lil attention span).
They are:
1. Where I aspire to be
2. The weekly goal I've set for myself at the beginning of the year
3. Well, at least it's better than radio money (anyone outside of LA or NYC who tells you they make bank in radio is a lying lier)
Through the pandemic, most weeks were 'better than radio' even if only slightly, some were not as good. However, I've kept my chin(s) up by reminding myself that I'm making a living as a 'creative' and a 'full time freelancer' during a world wide pandemic- something a LOT of creatives could not say. _________________ Moe Egan

This particular jag in this long and winding threadjack puts to mind the marvelous phrase about working VO full time that I have bold faced stolen from our beloved Boardmeister, Bruce Miles and have held close for many, many years. This one sentence has seen me through the lean days and weeks.
You either learn to ride the waves, or you watch from the beach.
Genius. And true. Some days ARE hard. Some seasons are hard. When your equipment goes farkakte before a directed session with a new client (like happened yesterday), when you never really know what next week is going to look like financially, when there's a new bit of technology and you don't have an IT department to 'splain it to you. It is scary. But to me, what's scarier is being stuck in a cube farm, reporting to a middle manager. _________________ Moe Egan

Most middle managers have been promoted out of cubeland, and have absolutely no idea what "managing" entails. They see themselves as being rewarded... they're no longer sitting behind an oar, pulling to the rhythm of a beaten drum. They are now the person beating the drum. They have no idea how to deal with any real "management" issues... and they immediately kick them up to senior management who, if they ever try to kick it higher, will be told, "I'm a director... I direct. You're a senior manager... you manage in a senior way." Managing middle-managers is a thankless task... they are usually thrashing around outside of their abilities... but quite petulant in defending themselves.
So... middle management are actually a pain in the backside for both ends of the hierarchy. It's even worse if they've got a mail-order MBA
Yes... I spent far too long in a corporate environment. It's soul-destroying at every level. Give me self-employment any day! _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Radio Four!!!
Bloody kids... I remember that dark day in 1967 when the BBC rebranded the stations. The "Light Program" became Radios 1 & 2 (pop and light entertainment respectively), the venerable "Third Program" became Radio 3, and the "Home Service" became Radio 4. Some elderly relatives were rendered catatonic by the change and viewed the BBC as being infiltrated by left-wing, Carnaby Street hippies (actually, not a million miles from the truth). The floral ties and flared trousers did not sit well with a generation who were still trying to tune the wireless to find out what was happening to our boys at the front. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Once again, the voice of reason shouting upstream. 'Bout time someone said this. Thank you, Mr. Banks.
Seems so many jumping into this business of late don't know the difference between an avocation and a vocation. _________________ Moe Egan

One of the real advantages to being in the #voiceover business for any #voicetalent #voiceactor is the ready supply of usable knowledge that moves with the market dynamic. https://vimeo.com/648286441
