Hi, I'm Kent Klineman, just joined the group. I'm an actor and voice actor and Musician trying to make a living at said activities. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Hoping this site can help with job leads and gear upgrades. I have a home booth and I'm finally getting some great auditions. I'm SAG so it's been tough because a lot of the work has gone non-SAG. And I won't do that. But if anyone knows of a way to make non SAG work into SAG work (I've heard about people doing this by approaching the producers directly, but have not done so myself yet) please let me know.
Here's my Acting Studio website...I have taught Acting and VO for years:
https://www.kentklineman.com/
Here's my band website--we just played The Mint!
https://blindpony.wixsite.com/pony
And here's my VO splash page with reels:
https://blindpony.wixsite.com/kentvo
I'm also looking to upgrade my web presences--would barter coaching for web expertise.
May the force be with us.

Hi Kent, welcome to the group (and thanks for the introduction).

Regarding the issue of converting non-union work to union, we actually have an expert on the site. I'll ping her and let her know the question has come up. It's actually a minefield of misunderstanding and half-truths (and sometimes speaking to the union only muddies the waters).

... and yes, may the force be with us (not the farce... but unfortunately, that is far more common) Smile

Thanks for the intro Kent!

SAG/AFTRA has also had seminars on converting. I'd ring their bell for links to those.

Melissa is definitely your go-to for accurate conversion info.

Book a consultation with her.

Hi Ken,

Welcome!

Happy to chat for a couple minutes about converting, if you like. Most Co-Ed work can be converted easily if it meets a couple of conditions. Feel free to shoot me a message.

I was just named Co-Chair of the Los Angeles VO Committee (or re-named as I have served in this position now for years) at SAG-AFTRA.

One of my missions for this term is to propose an update of the Voiceover page on the Union's site to include a list of vo contracts that can be converted from non-union to union, a step by step process, and video tutorials.

Here is the current page:

Hi Kent - Melissa Ex will set you straight on the conversion of nonunion to union. It's really dead easy when you've got the right project and paymaster.

Talking to Ex has resulted in my husband having his health insurance coverage for the last 2 years.

There's a chance you may stumble across job lead or two, but that's not really what this place is about. It's a community of friends with a shared interest in voiceover, where we can exchange ideas, ask for or provide advice, or just talk about the things friends talk about. If you do get a lead, it will probably be the result of having made a connection, because connections are the essence of what the VO-BB is about.
But you can definitely get some gear advice in the Gear section,.

Bob,
This is gold. Thanks for the link.
Also, thank you for your service (and initiatives!) on the SAG-AFTRA committee.

For some crazy reason I am reminded of the singing comic Tom Lehrer during one of his stage shows saying,”a lot of great songs came out of World War II, but it was not primarily considered to be a musical.”

Many great lessons, tips, “gold nuggets”, opportunities, and contacts will come out of your time on this site. You can make money by spending time here. I know I have. But that is not our direct goal. Our leading purpose is to be a community of performers supporting each other through communication in this often “lonely” profession.
