I've been using a Symmetrix 528E for some time with great results. But lo, the unit has developed a technical problem (broken button) and I need to switch it out.
Can anyone suggest an alternate processor that you're having success with a similar (or same) mic?

Budget?

I have used an Audient ID22 with a TLM 103 and it sounded pretty good.

I'm looking at the Avalon M5 or the Universal Audio 6176.

the Audient you reference is more of an interface, from Mic to computer, right? I'm looking for a processor. Does the Audient perform both functions?

this write-up has several options, but those two were specifically mentioned as being good for the TLM103:

Would the UA be overkill?

For a TLM 103 I would take the 6176. If you don't want all of the extra bells and whistles, go for a UA 610 solo which I think is the same pre-amp but without EQ and a compressor.

I recorded an audiobook at a studio here in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. I noticed that their TLM 103 sounded much warmer than mine. When I asked, the engineer said they were doing nothing to the signal except running it through an Avalon 737. Ah, I thought, that explains it! Now, I'm wanting either a 737 or an M5.

The best mic/pre combination I ever heard myself through was a Neumann U87 and a Manley VoxBox pre. Heavenly sound. Sadly I was there to portray a wacky German psychiatrist instead of reading something noble.

VoxBoxes are running just north of $4,000 these days.

Processor? If you mean mic pre I highly recommend a Neve based mic pre.
At our studio we kept the 103 permanently connected to a BAE1073MPF
which sounded fantastic. But any Neve clone will warm it up just the right amount.

There's Voxboxes on Ebay starting around 2700 including shipping.

I've been using a Neve Portico 5032 for a year or so now w/a Langevin (Manley) CR3A and Sennheiser MKH415. More than satisfied. But each person has their own prefs.

If you want the VoxBox sound, or a Neve sound, why not get the Apollo Twin Duo and get the VoxBox, or the Neve plug-in ? You can use the plug-ins in real time.

It is around 900 dollars for the hardware, and well worth the price Smile

The Apollo on it's own has great micpres, and it comes with the 610B mic pre plugin, as well as some others for compression and EQ.

The Manley and Neve plug-ins are extra !

There are a lot of variables with a 737...I wouldn't recommend it to anyone
who's not 110% familiar with how to correctly use all the features. And if all you want is a mic pre, the 737 is maybe the unit with the most overkill of features. Highly recommend the OP consider something much simpler.

I like the Apollo Twin option - but would need to modify my computer to handle the Thunderbolt connection.
