Three important things came out of my visit to LA.

1 - If during a talk about how to make so much money as a VO you DON'T mention P2P OR even look as if you may mention them, someone else will and it will result in the longest and most pointless part of the discussion.

2 - If you give a practical solution to a genuine problem giving to FULLY verifiable case histories as to how the solution has worked someone will you "That won't work!". If you remind them of the examples they will simply invent another problem. People can invent problems at a rate of two problems to any one solution. If they can't they discuss in our case P2P sites

3 - New word for the Lady Lexicon - Shuicide. Kelli showed me her shoe, the platform broke off. It happens at social gatherings (to heels as well).

"What happened girlfriend" asks one girl seeing her BFF limping to the car. BFF holds the two installments of her left Jimmy Choo.

"Shuicide" she sighs.

SCENE - VIP Lounge at the SAG Poker Jamboree sponsored by Edge Studios

We VIPs are chatting informally about how many Yachts we'd eaten and how many "people" we have looking after our every need. I am distracted by a familiar face so I glance to my left for a closer visual look using both of my eyes with which I am equipped with.

"Oh it is her!" Philip narrated in his head channelling Scott Brick. I stretched out my left arm, called her name. Herself looked, face changed (instead of a $10 bill it became one five, a two and 3 ones) then it looked as if someone had knocked all of the wind out of her. DON'T believe the stories! The reality of meeting me is that it reduces people to floods of tears!

"I didn't know you were going to be here!" she exclaimed sobbing into my shoulder.

Luckily she must routinely wear run proof mascara!

Shuicide. That's what they call it! I seem to be having a number of shuicide cases this summer.

I do wish I had been able to make it. If you ever decide to come to the West Coast and do another one, I'd love to go. Or if you want to do a webinar or sock puppet presentation, that too sounds good.

August 2014 compared to August 2013 sees me down about 40%. A one month disaster of biblical proportions has sent my world crashing into oblivion, the fall-out will resonate globally for generations.

"Why oh why?" I hear you cry. In your own time.

I did a thorough search. In August 2013 I did THAT job!

On the P2P sites when someone shouts "HOW MUCH!" it's not a good thing. In August 2013 I said more or less the same but it was a very good thing.

My career peaked in August 2013 from there it has been all downhill. I now find myself unable to do anything, the feeling of helplessness and failure has been with me for minutes.

Still, mustn't complain. Breakfast time.

Over luncheon last Saturday a VO person asked me how I knew someone she considered a friend. I thought for a moment and replied. She dug a little deeper and I was diplomatic. I was asked to elaborate and I proved suitably evasive.

Somewhere in the distance I heard a cock crow. So, LA was an experience of biblical proportions.

Call me St Peter or Pete for short.

Other vaguely interesting snippet. The longest diversion from the teaching programme was a discussion about the merits or otherwise of P2P sites. At no point did I mention P2P sites, look as if I may mention P2P sites or raise the subject of online sources of work. Control freak that I am I quickly steered people back on track which could be summed up thus "I know you can make your dreams come true". I felt obliged to add "it's a pity you appear to know otherwise".

"Well we don't really know" says the person from the production company/ad agency when you ask for details so that your fee will be fair.

Two things you should know. Most VOs on an internet would need 7 guesses as to the day of the week and still stand a good chance of getting it wrong AND when asked how much you WILL charge the response expected is to guess how little they will pay.

Here's how specific details on ads can be - A national TV commercial for which I recorded the VO was shown at 1.30am on Fox Sports and Fox News on the 26th August 2014.

We are all aware of MUNDAs (Made Up Non Disclosure Agreements) used by us to disguise the embarrassing truth that a job is less spectacular than we want other VOs to believe WELL ad agencies and production companies use them too!

Next time you get "I don't really know" try this.

"I know it's difficult and I have a rate that makes it easy for everyone to calculate. My fee is 1% of the total budget for the campaign. The best part about this rate is that most agencies and production companies are able to negotiate 1% discounts across suppliers, unless they really suck as business people, so in effect get my services for nothing"

I had a conversation with a Voice Over manager (management company) a couple of years ago and the person with whom I spoke knew exactly what was in it for them. Needless to say I pressed him for details as to the exact nature of my benefit from the deal.

"We'll get you opportunities" was his best response. I have no idea what he meant by that remark and suspect that neither did he.

This morning I looked again at the cost of his services and looked elsewhere at how that money may be spent. It would fund a mortgage to buy this ......
