Latest from Cinegear.

Every year, whenever possible I take a trip to the Cinegear Expo, held this year, at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood. Why does a VO guy head off to a show for intended for film production people? Well, I usually run into at least one VO customer at the event - twice, my being at the event turned into specific actual VO gigs.

It also gives me a chance to get a "feeling" for the direction the industry is headed. Last year, the show, at least when I was there, was packed. This year, it seemed more tame. My impressions:

The "hot" items this year were quadcopters, mini-camera stabilization systems, and 4K video.

The crowd seemed overall, younger than last year - more students and fewer of the "old guard" cinematographers and directors. I heard "indigogo" and "kickstarter" mentioned more than a few times.

There seemed to be far fewer people from Hollywood. Most everyone I talked to was from out-of-state. Does that reflect the current business state in Southern California?

Last year, when Sony was showing off 4K HD video (Twice or four times the quality of regular HD), I was not convinced. Part of that was because the 4K footage they were showing was out of focus. This year, I became a convert - the 4K video looked fantastic.

The end of the "film" era, sadly, was even more apparent - or more correctly not apparent. I didn't see a single Film Camera. There were a number of newly out-of-work people who were employed previously by Deluxe Lab's film processing lab, which closed in April.

The "tone" I felt last year was one of "cautious optimism", this year that optimism seemed to be missing, although I didn't feel any of "pessimistic" feeling of previous years either. It seemed that the tone could be best be described as "what-ever". [/img]

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing that.

Yeah, I think everything has gone beyond yay or nay into 'whatever'. The new normals are weird. For example (and this is not a political statement) the number of jobs is finally back to pre-recession levels. However, there are 7 million more people in the work force today competeting for those jobs. Whatever...
