just an observation...

my best guess is that both of the ladies are from the Midwest.. telltale is the "to's" become "ta's".. conversational or emotive natural reads from Midwest folks all seem to have their "to's - ta's" and "you's - ya's" .. not to mention "for" becoming "fer"...

Oh this is so midwestern me and made me chuckle. To directly mention "fer", here's this I did with many right up front examples of it. FER!

i had a session a couple of weeks ago and **really** had to work at under-annunciating. for example, mountain had to be said mount-in.

utahans are pretty lazy speakers (pore s'moreon, s'great, s'cute) and it was for a program for local pbs affiliate, so i had to try to be folksy-like. i was ignernt, as "they" say ...

Uh, clearly I'm missing something here:

How would you normally be saying it?

sure, that sounds good ----I wasn't thinking Diane meant that as such a pronounced i-- We could just skip all this and call it a really big hill

But first can we slip the word schwa in here somewhere. Schwa..yeah, that's what we need.

When a client asks for the voice to sound "cowboy or country" I simply switch into the voice I normally use when I'm talking to my relatives.

Problem solved.

y'all.

But "casual" speech can also sound "honest" or even "intimate." I thought what both of these ladies did at the top was excellent. Although, I do think the engineer is responsible for leaving in some mouth pops. But hey....who do you think actually noticed...or cared?

VO People.

And as we all know...they don't get a vote.

that's a valid point, but it can also come across "lazy" and "uninspired".. Telling a story with a point of view and with a certain juice behind the words, doesn't work all that well with casual speech.. it's tricky.. It's much easier to have the focus forward, toward the lips and tounge (where standard British is usually placed), when trying to make a point, and make it clear "organically" for your listener..

when I'm in my back yard at a cook out I'm good with just basic regional speech.. I'm not normally trying to make a very clear point of view and get a point across, generally speaking..

Nancy Wolfson makes a great point in one of her lessons.. When you get a direction of "casual, conversational".. they usually just mean they don't want
standard "announcery"..

i saw your post, bill, and thought that i should have done the same! somehow phonetics of 'mountain' ain't translating.

funny this - i was on the plane last week out of slc when the flight attendant began her yada yada and i could NOT believe how many complete syllables were dropped. i wondered if she had some impediment (other than being from utah) but discovered she spoke perfectly well off-mic.
