For those of you who are Audacity fans, 2.0.1 was just released. There were two items on the list that blew my mind (in bold):

Changes and Improvements
Shortcuts can now be added in Keyboard Preferences to items in the Generate, Effect or Analyze menus, including user-added plug-ins.
Nyquist Effect plug-ins can now be added to Chains.
New "Paulstretch" effect for extreme slowdown without pitch change.
New "Sample Data Export" Analyze effect for exporting a file containing amplitude values for each sample in the selection.
New Preference (off by default) to import files On-Demand (without seek ability) when using the optional FFmpeg library.
New Preference (off by default) to retain labels when deleting a selection that snaps to the label without extending past it.
(Windows installer) New option to reset Preferences on next launch.
(Mac) Audacity now has excellent compatibility with the VoiceOver screen reader. For details, please see http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/accessibility.html#mac.
CleanSpeech Mode (no longer supported) will not now be enabled even if it was enabled by an earlier version of Audacity.
Added Serbian (Latin and Cyrillic) translations.

Being able to map normalize, and especially fade in and fade out is a huuuuuge time saver for voice editing. And being able to put Nyquist Effect Plug-ins into chains (macros), is pretty amazing.

I know everybody has their favorite editors, but I switched to Audacity from Pro Tools (for single file editing), because it's so fast, and has the ability to change keyboard shortcuts. This literally cuts my editing time in half.

Just downloaded the trial for Audition CS6. I had some issues with my Cakewalk software so I decided it was time to make a change. Biggest thing I like so far is the ability to import a video into it to edit audio from within the software.

Does Audacity still start a new track for each new take? That was driving me nuts when I tried it last.

Hi James,
Yeah, it still does start a new track for each take. However, You can just hit <Shift>+R, or go to the Transport menu and select Append recording, and it will record wherever your cursor is (on a particular track).

Thanks for the tip!
I'm still playing around with my trial of Audition and will give Audacity a good run through once that's expired. The video feature of Audition will probably be the reason I go with that though.

Sorry can you explain what "map normalize" means, and how it saves time?

TIA

Absolutely.
Essentially, 2.0.1 allows you to set up custom keyboard key bindings for most effects that come with Audacity now.

So instead of having to go into the menu to normalize something or do do a fade out, you can now map it to keyboard keys. Here are a couple I've set up:

normalize as <ctrl> + e
fade out as <ctrl> + g
fade in as <ctrl> + f

That keeps my left hand on the left side of the keyboard, my right on the mouse, away from the menus and close to the waveforms I'm working with.

You can also use effects or other actions in chains (macros) as well. So if you do some common tasks a lot, instead of having to do them all manually, you can set up your macro, run it, and save yourself a bit more time.

I hope that helps!

Great drop! Totally missed this over the summer. Already downloaded!

Audacity would do the job for 98% of the voiceover talents recording from home. Probably even me.
