National Voice Over Appreciation Month
National Voice Over Month
Voice Over Appreciation Month
Voice Over Month
International Voice Over Month

----------- all of the above being considered for 2011. The current site is http://www.nationalvoiceovermonth.com ----------------

Whatever it's called, September is approaching quickly... and we've got good momentum from 2010, still.

Last year, I came up with the idea for this last-minute and and Peter O'Connell saved my bacon by providing impetus, ideas, and support.

At FaffCon, Peter and I talked about how to make NVOM even better for 2011, and I would love your ideas.

Now, I know this event does not have universal support. In fact some of the members of this fine forum "harumphed" about it. That's OK... but I'm here to tell you that the overwhelming response was positive, encouraging.... even cathartic.

This event strikes a chord with a lot of our ilk, and I'd like to make it an event that benefits our profession with tangible PR, tools, and examples of our work that you can build upon in your own branding and promotional efforts.

Last year brought a specific hue and cry to make the event "international". That's a given...but the title or the website URL may not specifically reflect that.

Last year, we also mounted some very engaging and successful collaborative PSA's.

What can be done to advance this year's event to bring our profession into focus for our clients and others at large... to raise awareness.... and to give voice actors a rallying point?????

I'd appreciate your input. Feel free to tell me to go take a hike with this idea if you believe it's worthless.

In short, to me it's like creating some sort of competition and then giving yourself and your friends the awards. Or maybe like giving a eulogy at your own funeral.

I would much prefer some sort of "People who hire Voice Actor's Appreciation Month".

Given the almost 100% spin given to the voice acting profession, if anything it would probably make more sense to have something a bit more "truth in advertising" oriented and call it "Voice Actors Depreciation Month".

I could get behind a "day of awesome" or something, but a month is a bridge too far for the likes of me.

I think it was fun last year and it'll be fun this year. I just hope we don't take it -- or ourselves -- too seriously.

As a basic rule of life I tend to err on the side of saying nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of people who want and indeed enjoy doing something. Equally I would never dismiss as nay sayers, negs or harumphers (what a great word) anyone who didn't share the enthusiasm of participants.

Is National Voice Over Appreciation Month of any real commercial value to any voice over, producer, to us as an industry? Will the general public love us more? Probably not but then answering those questions may not be the prime motivators for creating said month.

Am I interested in VOAM? No. So I believe the people with an interest are wrong? No. So they BELIEVE I'm wrong or indeed I AM wrong? No. As the phrase favoured by psychologists goes "I'm not wrong, I'm just not you?"

Enjoy participating or sitting it out but above all be happy in what ever you do.

As log as it doesn't interfere with "Take a Scot to Lunch Day".

Also, please don't have it in September. I'm planning my nervous breakdown then.

What's that? Have Scotch for lunch today? Sign me up for a pour of The Famous Grouse, or better yet, some Talisker or Glenfiddich!

What Connie said.

Plus, I tend to treat every day as "People who hire Voice Actors Appreciation Day." Just without the fanfare and ticker tape parades.

I want to thank all of you who offered some feedback on the NVOM idea.

I especially appreciated the even-handed way that Philip replied.

I'm not being facetious when I say I'm grateful for the feedback.

I'm noticing, though, that the majority who responded in less-than-enthusiastic responses (note: not negative) are seasoned, long-time, regulars in the world of VO, and on this board.... and wondering what skew that puts on the (admittedly) unscientific polling on this idea.

And...I keep coming back to the rash of support, the excitement, and the encouragement I rec'd from scores of fellow voice actors in response to last year's inaugural event.

Where are they? What happened to that? Was that just a flash-in-the-pan? Is there no way to capitalize on that well of good will?

I have no problem with switching the focus for THIS year's event to "VO CLIENTS APPRECIATION" Month...or week...or day.

If that appeals to some of you, then what shape would that take? How would that look?

I thank you again in advance for considering this "take" on things.
