...and the rest of us gear sluts.

Have you seen the new "Snowball" microphone from Blue? (http://bluemics.com)

It uses two elements, and you can switch in either or both for various kinds of room or situation.

But here's the cool thing; It's a USB device.

That's right. Plug the mic into the USB slot on the laptop, and you're recording. Bypass your crappy sound card and your noisy mic input, forget your MAudio box and your Behringer mixer and DBX mic processor and all those other things we use for a preamp.

Suggested retail is a measly $139, another pleasant surprise.

I'll be anxious to hear a report, if anyone gets a chance to try one.

I found this article about it. BTW, drop the "s" from the URL of bluemics.com and it works.

Thanks for the tip, Art!

Hold the phone!

This may be exactly what I'm looking for ....for my show on the road!

So, I just stick into my laptop and use my Cool Edit and make my MP3's?

Bo:

Sorry to take so long to answer; I took a week off in New Orleans, wandering around the French Quarter with a plastic cup in my hand...a full, blessed, 9 days with no email and almost no phone calls.

Yes, I think that's exactly how it would work. Just plug the mic into your USB and start recording.

Since it doesn't use your sound card, I have no idea how it would show up as a source. Maybe there'd be a new pot on your Windows mixer.

There are manuals for the mics on the Blue web site, at:

http://bluemic.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Products&file=index&man=1

But the Snowball is brand new, and its manual isn't there yet. I hope whoever is the first one of us to get one will take a few minutes to send us a full report.
