Hi gang,
Been out of pocket for the last couple weeks...lots o' work...thankfully. So this tread had already evolved into something other than the orginal question about whether or not there are things we would refuse to do when I read it.
Not that my opinion is of any significance...I have to weigh in with my 2 cents worth anyway and agree with Frank, Courvo and Bailey.
ABSOLUTELY, there are gigs I decline. Hasn't happened all that often but the times that it did would have put me in another income tax bracket and MUCH closer to retirement. The latest one was the lead character for an "adult cartoon" ... no not that adult... think South Park only filthier...that is now on TV.
The orginal audition didn't send up any red flags but when my agent said I was selected and to come to make arrangements...I was presented with the script for the first episode. Couldn't do it. What a piece of trash. Sure, they went ahead without me and some other guy has me to thank for his "good fortune" but he is welcome to it.
My voice is my life and I refuse to use it in ways I consider inappropriate...no matter how much it pays. I still gotta live with me and the occasional person who says "hey, I heard you on such and such..."

Several years ago, during a lean period of work, I auditioned for a gay, soft porn audio book. I did not get the gig.
As a practicing heterosexual I was pleased. As an actor who thinks he can do anything, not so thrilled. Ahh, life's conundrums.

I ended up doing a PSA for the Dark Side yesterday. It was a non-profit organisation and it wasn't immediately obvious what their affiliations were.
It doesn't bother me so much that I did it, it bothers me that I gave them my non-profit discount without checking them out first. Now I'm going to have to make a donation to the other side as an antidote. |

Just yesterday I turned down a job for which I had been cast. After looking at the script I decided that the $600 they were offering wasn't worth recording some not-so-soft-core porn. (The audition script gave no indication of the final script content, or I wouldn't have done the audition in the first place.) _________________ Be well,

You wouldn't happen to have their number handy?

I was called in to do a spot for Ross Perot when he was running for president. I took the money and gave it to the candidate I was in favor of.
If I was a plumber and his toilet needed fixing, I would have fixed it. But I do voice overs and he needed a voice over done. And it was national money (pretty close to what a plumber would have charged).

Hey, there must be something in the air. Saw this on the local Craig's list:
"Seeking female voice models to record pre-written, custom erotic stories. The erotica is recorded from your home computer and sumbitted electronically. We can provide the necessary equipment if you are hired. Typically requires about 2-4 hours a week and pays about $30/hour."
That's one way to get free recording equipment, ladies!
Wait a minute. It says "We can provide the necessary equipment if you are hired." It didn't specifiy "recording" equipment. Hmmmmm.
Well, it might be fun no matter what.

I auditioned for an audiobook publisher and one of the pieces of copy was a rather explicit gay scene in a volkswagen in a field. I didn't get the job but if I had, I probably would have done it without too much hesitation. OK, maybe a little hesitation. _________________ Joe Rodriguez, Bilingual Voice Actor | The Voiceover Thespian Blog |
