VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I'm currently on the hunt for a new mic to replace/compliment my Rode NT2000 and have narrowed it down to either the Peluso 2247 LE, Lawson L47 MP MKII or the much pricier Horch RM2J...I'm interested to hear from you if you've had personal experience with any of these mics, cheers!

I used a Peluso mic (I *think* it was the 2247) for a warm and authoritative hospital spot last year and was mightily impressed. It's on my short list for whenever want a shinny expensive new mic. (I'm not a real deep pipes kinda guy - you can listen to my voice at www.tomtest.com and see if I'm in your range).

Here is what I think, based on personal conversations with John Peluso.

I would go with the 22-47 SE. The LE uses a German tube that may our may not be in good supply. The SE uses a RCA metal tube that according to John is in better supply and is about 2db quieter.

The conversation took place in their lab on the day that I took possession of three matched 22-251. Latter on, I had a cable problem with one of the microphones. I call John and he sent a new cable out right away, no hassles. It seems they had received cable from the manufacture that had problems.

Here is one additional bit of info. John worked as a recording engineer in studios in Chicago area that specialized in VO work. He has better in site into our realm of recording than folks who come from music production backgrounds.

I just looked at the Lawson page and noticed that every capsule they make will fit any other body that they make “It takes a couple of minutes to swap out a Lawson capsule using no special tools. Your L251 can become an L47MP and vice versa”. Peluso make a 22-251 and a P-12 (inspired by the AKG C12. Each of the microphones in the Peluso line are designed with circuits that favor the Capsule used in that microphone. Larson’s system is to my thinking a one circuit fits all.

Thanks for the tip Ed, I'm trying out a Peluso 2247 SE on loan right now and I'm waiting to hear back about the Horch from 2 separate sources, cheers!

Big thumbs up for the Lawson here. Although I found the stock tube to be a little noisy. A NOS vintage Amperex has turned it into a honey. Of course with any LDC mics like these, your booth needs to be in good shape. It'll throw a spotlight on any deficiencies in double quick time - as I can testify!
