Dale Carnegie rule #1: Don't criticize, condemn, or complain.
Heck, I'm a Dale Carnegie Training graduate and I still have a hard time with this one. _________________ Jeff

We all believe "I'm Ok - It's OTHER PEOPLE!" So what do we do? Set out to make them better by using techniques taught to us by ...insert name here. I honestly believe there ought to be a law in place to ensure everyone reads Dale Carnegie's book "How to win friends and influence people" and pass a basic exam on the content. Anyone who hasn't read it and is concerned about the title should be reassured that the title includes the word INFLUENCE and in no way does the author encourage cynical exploitation. There should be a book for that "How to click here to make friends and then Network people". Make other people ok? Understand them? Good idea, but first get to know you, really know and understand you, warts and all.
Be nice? What does that mean? Context is everything.
Cocktail party nice is sugar sweet. It's a party, you are there to enjoy yourself, get to know other people and make them feel good. If you ever encounter me at a party listen for the magic phrase, delivered with a smile "excuse me, time to circulate". I'm being insincere, really I am but more importantly I'm being nice. The phrase is usually directed at one person and what I am REALLY saying is .........unprintable.
I'm going to be nice now and save a lot of people a great deal of time. You have nothing to gain financially or professionally from getting to know me.
Be nice and remember that the saying - one can never be too honest - is complete ........unprintable |

ahhh but Phillip, I have learned so much by getting to know you. And in those teachings I have gained insight and professional knowledge.
Through you I have learned that I am the right person for the job, I must network face to face locally with the people that hire, and my microphone or signal path is not going to keep me from auditioning.
That and I don't need a Sennheiser 416. My new Studio Project B1 will complement my RE-20.
I have also learned from you that you need to take care of yourself and find time to walk the dog along the beach.
excuse me, they've freshened up the bacon wrapped scallops... _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

"It's nice to be nice to the nice."
A college friend used to say this a lot. Ah, the things one learns in college. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Bumper sticker seen many times: Mean people suck
I've got an ad agency I write, voice and produce for that pays me well above 10K a year in fees. The folks who give me the work are all nice. Their bookkeeper on the other hand is a weasel of a little old lady who gives me the most awful excuses for why the check is late...really lame...and I so want to tell her where to shove it, but not only does she cut the checks, her husband owns the place. Arrrrgh!
I cannot tell you how hard it is to get what's due me and keep a civil tongue. When I talk to him I get a check pretty quickly, but I just don't want to go over her head too often. I so don't want to fire an account that alone pays my mortgage, but there are days........

Frank Burns said that in a MASH episode and while they lampooned him for it, it is certainly one of the most memorable lines from a TV show. _________________ Playing for a living...
