When asked about voice over worked by actors on location for a TV drama or some other such project, I give them this "test piece".

Direction - You are warm, reassuring, telling it like it is, unaffected, formal, in effect you are stating the fact that because "we're here" everything is ok. It's the live announcer ident for a BBC network radio station.

No music, no fx, processor/compressor on BYPASS

So what's the prize this time?

An evening out with Charlotte Green perhaps.

No SFX or music Huh? OK, I'll behave this time.

Short copy like this is always the most trouble. I often find that a client will "um" and "ah" in the studio and have you read "Toyoda" or whetever the company logo is a hundred times until everybody begins cracking up because it's starting to sound like the most stupid word ever invented. Then they'll pick one of the first takes you recorded. The golden rule here is always record the rehearsal.

Too late here to record now. Will submit tomorrow.

Admit it, go on I dare you! You don't know where the BYPASS switch is do you?

Charlotte does so yah boo sucks!

Do you think those in the colonies will get any of this?

Just out of interest I used to be a continuity announcer for the same TV company as this lady.

Hah! I know where the bypass is. They built it about ten years ago. Improved traffic flow considerably.

Every time a listener hears those two words in the context of an announcement it is delivered live. For the announcer there is no going back and the responsibility for maintaining the strength and familiarity of the brand rests with them.

Mike quite rightly stated that the short pieces are the most difficult, learning to master them is key to our continued success.

O.K., I thought I'd join in the foray. It's kinda like when a prominent man came to this area in the mid 1800's, he looked over the valley and said, "This Is The Place".

think of how many ways you can say those words, questioning, terriffied, ominous,,, and the list does on.. Your imagination is the guide to how you hear the words... how good is your imagination today?

All right folks, as soon as the light of the sun comes back around Michigan way, I'm going to see what I can do with good ol' Radio Four. Banksey, do you think I'd be able to send it to you for posting? I'd be ever so appreciative. Smile
