Do you all have any thoughts about software/hardware for IVR? My client wants me to upload files into their phone system that are .wav file type with an audio fomat of PCM, 8kHz of 11.025kHz, 16 bit, mono. Wouldn't be a problem, but the files have to be recorded in, not converted to, this format. Is there software or hardware that I can use to do this? Thanks for your help.

Sound Forge and Adobe Audition should have those presets to record directly into.

Would you know if those programs play well with M-Audio Firewire 410? I've just gotten the bugs worked out of my system using ProTools with the 410, I would hate to mess with it.

Turns out the client was happy with what I did directly into their phone system, so it was much ado about nothing. But Deidre, what am I not seeing........when I go into PT to bounce the files, the sample rates start at 44.1kHz. And what's the squeezer?

Hold on-- I may be out of my mind-- let me check a session.

The squeezer is one of the possible adjustments you can make as you choose the settings for the final product.
Pah.

Do you have your user's manual?
It should also be in the accompanying help docs.

OK, Here's the deal:

You can HAND ENTER the sample rate.
Use Squeezer is a checkbox in the bounce window.

I wonder how it would sound?

You can hand enter the sample rate??? Who knew. And as many times as I've bounced files, I have never seen "Use squeezer". Life is scary sometimes.

Did you see the movie "What the Bleep Do We Know" with the scene about Columbus and the Indians not seeing the ships until the medicine man told them they were there? If not, this is just blather but if you have.......I'm having an Indian moment.

Hi Kit - you can record in Windows Sound Recorder and save as a 16-bit 11025kHz PCM - .wav. (If you're on a pc)

I'm bumping this because another phone prompt issue has come up. Does anyone know if there is a way to convert mp3 or wav files to A/MU-law files without buying Vox?

Vox is some sort of pro-tools thing I presume?

Audition 1.5 and 2.0 will both save into A/mu-Law if you happen to have access to either one.

Adobe Audition and Sound Forge both have A/mu-Law save. I do it all the time.

Recording at a higher sample and bit rate and then converting makes a far better sound than recording at the lower rates. Did anyone offer you an explanation for why they HAD to be recorded in the lower rates. I just can't figure out why they would insist on that. But it can be done. (I'd ask to do a test - recording it in the lower rates for one file AND recording at 44.1/16 Bit and then converting and see if they can play it.)

The thing about Vox Studio is that it is specifically for telephony prompts and is optimized for the lower sample and bit rates that the files end up in. Yeah, it's expensive, but it has been a life- saver (well, let's say a pay check saver) since I started figuring out all its options.

I have Sound Forge 8.0 on my laptop (ProTools on my PC for gigs), and when I use the drop down menu to save a file A/MU-law isn't there. Am I looking in the wrong place.

Deirdre, I so wish I was using a Mac. The DUC solutions in the link you posted would have solved the problem.
