I pass this on, as it just came to me, and may have an effect on many of us as time goes on. Basically, as I understand things, Portals will charge those who "send" E-mail and give the payee priority delivery of E-mail over non-payees.

But, charging for postage does not seem to stop junk mail from arriving at my house. How about yours?

I already pay for my Yahoo account (enhanced stuff, aliases, customer URL + disk space). So, I'd not want any of you folks who send me E-mail to have to pay anything. And, that includes clients. I guess it's a way to try to stop Spam.

It seems to me, having an E-mail account for those who are authorized to get through is the simplest, and cheapest, way to combat Spam. One E-mail would be for public use (and junk). Another for private.

More fun. Are we there, yet? _________________ Charlie |

				| Unless I'm mis-reading something, doesn't this apply only to AOHell and Yahoo email users? |

Yep. Just AOL and Yahoo, so far. I was listening to a radio show a few weeks ago and this idea was being discussed, as a way to minimize or rid the Internet of Spam. During the interview, no specific company was mentioned. Looks like the idea's gained steam and is rolling down the track. _________________ Charlie |

Is this change only for "outgoing" emails? Would you be charged for "incoming" emails?... and if so... is there a charge ONLY if you open the email?

I've got SBC Global/Yahoo... what am I paying $50 a month for?... and then they want to put a 1cent surcharge on my emails?

It would be for incoming E-mail! That's still outrageous, as my clients and prospects would have to pay to get priority. And, I'm already paying, too. That's the last thing I want -- my prospects E-mail having a lower priority unless they pay.

Last week, a studio called and tried to send me some info. The problem was net congestion. It took the E-mail about 20 minutes to arrive. It eventually did, but she could have Fax'd me -- or I could simply have written down info while talking to her on the telephone. That's the difference between Web tone and dial tone. _________________ Charlie |

				| Foul! No charge per e-mail. I'll handle the SPAM with filters, thank you! |

I received an email from MoveOn.org just now with more about this, and a petition to sign to try to get AOL to cut it out. The gist is:

AOL recently announced what amounts to an "email tax." Under this pay-to-send system, large emailers willing to pay an "email tax" can bypass spam filters and get guaranteed access to people's inboxes—with their messages having a preferential high-priority designation.

If you'd like to learn more, and/or sign the petition go to:

If it were only AOL, I wouldn't sweat it much for my own e-mail. However, I use Yahoo! Small Business for my VO e-mail and webhosting. I deal with enough Phishing scams and "Cheep V!agr@" e-mails as it is.

I doubt it will do one whit of good, but I e-mailed my state representatives asking them not to cower to Time/Warner lobbyists.

Then I enjoyed a good laugh. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.
