Truth is that he probably, like most young musicians, was offered the $5,000 and took it. Even back in 1963 royalties for performers were an option. He's gets nothing every time the song is played because that is exactly the amount he said he wanted and signed a contract to that effect.

The ramifications of this bill is that radio will become less of a music deliverer and more of a performer developer. The RIAA will be cutting their own throat, or to say it another way, biting the hand that feeds them. There is alot of talk of some radio stations taking on unsigned talent to make their music and play it locally on said stations. I think the RIAA needs to target the scum record companies that screwed the performers in the first place. Radio is free advertisment for the music the artists are trying to sell. Why is no one in Congress pointing out that the record companies have gotten rich off the backs of the lesser artists and seem to thrive even when the artisis are starving? Why is it that the larger names in music go on to start their own record labels? It isnt radio that is making the most profit from the artists, just look at the state of radio today with Clear Channel ALONE laying off 2500 people in the last 5 months. Radio already pays ASCAP and BMI fees to for playing most if not all the music it uses and webcasters pay an exhorbatant fee for using music on a webcast. radio station.
Sorry for the rant but I get a bit hot with the RIAA playing bully to the wrong group of people.
