Kind of a silly question: I want to do some more cork exercises. I've been using one from an old wine bottle but now it tastes really bad. Anybody know if you can buy just the cork from a wine store or something? I'd hate to drive all the way out there if they most likely don't have them.

Maybe I should just buy a bottle of wine.

Go online and search for home brewing outfits. They usually sell all the extra assortments - you can usually pick up a bag of 25/50 corks for $10.00.

You could also go buy a $2 bottle of wine....

If you want to avoid that bitter taste, not to mention the grit and goo that accumulates in your mouth after about 30-seconds, try a pencil... I know, some of us have bigger mouths than others so maybe substitue a smelly felt (they smell good if you take the cap off) or highlighter... just make sure you don't bite down too hard! Oh yeah, if you do take the cap off and it isn't a smelly felt, watch out for the fumes... they tend to make ya light headed and goofy! (Yes, that's what happened to me)

When I was in college we used marbles. See how many you could put in your mouth and still talk. I kind of got soured on that when I swalled one. I won't go into detail, but let's just say I was not pleased with the <ahem> outcome.

I don't like using a cork -- I use a pen placed sideways in the mouth, like a horse's bit. Put it just behind your eye teeth and practice away. Plastic pen cases are completely washable and/or you can keep a specific pen for mouth warm-ups.

I get a bag of pens for each of my VO classes and pass one out to everyone to keep as their Pen-Trick pen.

See, I have a jam session at my crib every Thursday evening. And, a bunch of musicians show up. At least two of them bring two or more bottles of wine, every time. I'll send you all the corks you want. Or better, just find a jam session in your neighborhood. Musicians tend to have universal habits.

Hi. For the uninitiated (yours truly), would someone please describe the exercise you are referring to? I think it's safe to say imbibing plenty of wine is involved. Is there an exercise that uses bottle caps?

I prefer carpet tacks. Sure, it can be painful at first - but once you learn not to hurt yourself, you reap the rewards.

My wife just came into the office and saw me sitting here at the computer, reading some copy with a pen in my mouth. The two things she said to me were, and I quote, "How can you record anything with a pen in your mouth(I wasn't)?" and "Drool is sooo attractive." Then she started laughing at me. But then she said she loves me and told me to keep working, so all is right with the world again.

Hey... a little drool in the pursuit of a passion is a good thing!

A supportive spouse is definately a necessity when you're tyring to get a start in this business, because it's very easy to get lost in front of the mic or computer for hours on end! It certainly sounds like you have a catch, who supports you... even if you do look goofy and have drool streaming down your chin.

Maybe we just came up with a new component to that v/o starter's kit we've been talking about... a bib
