I've been trying to track down the source of an annoying, low frequency hum that appears as background noise in my tracks. I can remove it with a noise gate or EQ, but I wanted to see where it was coming from so I got everybody and their brother over here on Friday to check it out. We took everything apart (again), swapped out cables, turned everything off and turned it back on one component at a time. We isolated it to either the mic cable, or the mic.

I had Tidepool Audio in Portland overnight me another mic so I could try the system with different, high quality mic. He didn't have another Gefell, so he sent a Soundelux U195. What a sweet mic this baby is. It has a switch for "fat" or "norm", so it's like getting two mics in one, and also has a low-pass filter. I did a narration with it last night in the "fat" mode, and it has a beautiful sound. I'll do more work with it today, and then decide if I want to buy it.

The price of Gefell mics has increased almost 30% since the first of the year. If you're interested in getting one that hasn't seen the light outside a sound booth for the last two years, let me know. If I sell it, the cost will be $800.

I've heard the Soundelux is a terrific microphone and have been thinking about trying one myself. Good luck with it!!!!!

As we know, it's the equipment, not the performance, that makes the VO.

(sorry Kitzie - I'm just trying to goad Philip. I love microphones!)
