Hi guys,

I want to buy a Neumann TLM 103.
I'm looking at ebay, but I'd rather buy from one of you, if you've got a spare one that you are not using.
I'd collect in LA or would need shipping to LA.
Get in touch if you've got one to sell!

cheers! Smile

Hi Claire,

I just bought mine two weeks ago, and it's superb. I was using an AT4040 before, which was a good mic, but the 103 is smoother, more natural-sounding and just has a rich quality to it that the AT never did. Also, any problems with harshness and occasional sibilance are a thing of the past.

How are you getting on?

Mike

Thanks Mike.
I fell in Love with this mic when I recorded my Disney commercials 3 months ago. Of course it could also be the studio's pre-amp etc... but getting the mic is a good start.
I'm moving to LA in a week (from London), so I got it shipped there and won't be able to test it straight away... Cry
But then again, I'm so busy with the move...
I'm really exited! I also bought an ISDN codec, my new studio is going to be awesome! Laugh
I noticed that you did all the upgrades too before Christmas, I hope you're happy with all of it!

Congrats on your move and your mic, Claire!

I'm liking my 103 with a tube preamp...but a good tube makes all the difference: for example: http://lanceblair.net/files/JJvs.Valvo.mp3

I can imagine the TLM 103 working very well with your voice, enjoy it!

This is a good point, make sure it's mated to a preamp that does your mic justice. I've heard $100 chinese mics sound fantastic with a good mic pre.
They go together like peanut butter and jelly.

True!!! For example, I'm liking my Speck 5.0 preamp with my MLX v67g ($99) and e935 ($180) and other dynamics...but not as much with my TLM 103...that really seems to work better with the ART MPA.

On the other hand, I don't like the v67g with the ART...

Warner Brothers Animation use TLM 103's.

With my extensive research along with other notable Voice Actors, we have found that an Avalon 737sp pre is just perfect for the TLM 103, as a mater of fact someone made the comment that the Avalon 737sp made his 103 sound just like a U87.

I have also found that a vintage RCA BA-31 sounds just as magical.

Conclusion: It's the transformers that make the difference. The very thing that's missing in the 103 that's not in the U87. Of course the tube circuit doesn't hurt either.

The 103-737 combo is in use at DG Entertainment in Studio City. Very well loved... I setup Miguel Ferrer with that combo, and I know a few others that use it.

Claire...an early "Welcome" to California is in order. Good luck with the move.
