A client needs me to provide audio to them at 8000 khz, 16-bit.
I read that it's best to record at 44100 (or higher?) and downsample, but the playback over the phone was too staticky. Should the original recording be at 8000?
Any input from you with experience in this area is most appreciated!
The ultimate format is u-Law, which I can do with AA3.0.
Thanks! _________________ www.dereksvoice.com |

telephony is the trickiest thing in this business, imho. i've found it best to go ahead and record in the format/bit/sampling rate requested by the client, rather than down sample. AND i have had the problem that my sound card does not play well with sampling rates that are too low and on MY end it sounds "staticy" but on my laptop through vox studio it sounds fine ... liz has helped me out with this kind of thing a LOT. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Derek, telephony stuff is always a bit tricky. You can easily just record it at 8k and format it as requested and send them that. It clearly sounds diff. but that's the nature of the phone...chances are the product you deliver, once installed, will not sound staticky at all. Are you just trying to listen to it through your own phone before sending it?
Recording it at 48k and downsampling works fine and is now how it is done. I've been doing telephony for about 12 years and up until about 5 years ago, maybe less, we always recorded at 8k. No longer. It depends on if you want to hold onto a better sampling rate.
Good luck and feel free to pm me if you have any questions. I'll gladly just push you off to my husband who deals with this stuff all the time . _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

if i record in aa (1.0) at the usual 44,1 16-bit mono and downsample to the standard 8k, 8-bit mono mu-law , it sounds terrible. if i record the same rate with vox studio and use the conversion i've preset with normalizing etc, the end result being that same 8k, 8-bit, mono mu-law, it sounds terrific. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Mandy's right... it's the nature of the audio at that rate. It may sound odd in your speakers, but over the phone it sounds fine.
In fact, after recording some voice prompts for a client recently, I called their phone system to hear how it sounded (in the years i've been doing OHMs I don't think I ever did that before). While it sounded staticy and a bit overmodulated when i played back through my board; when i called the audio sounded fine.
I always record at my normal sample rates, then resample to specs a client gives. Never had a problem. _________________ Jim Feldman
