This is just SAD...I found this on allaccess...

We are a large market cluster exploring voiceover for Barter. Our formats include Country, Rock, and Hot AC.

If interested, please email a short demo or link to your website to xxxx@aol.com

Please send ONLY if you accept barter. We are looking to move away from cash for voice, so cash for voice demos will not be considered.

I wonder what they could trade?

I once did a gig for the local paper it was 50% money and 50% space in the paper.

I priced it so the Cash took care of me and a fair profit. Then I got lucky and sold the Paper Barter to a new bank that I was doing TV spots for.

I would say that luck had a hand in that.

What, luck that it was then and not NOW?

Thomas Jefferson said, "I'm a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it."

I don't think it was "luck", Ed.

Barter/trade can be good, just don't let it get to be more than about 5% of your business.

Another good thought on bartering is to find out what is offered BEFORE agreeing to contractual work. Make sure the other side has what you want and has it on hand so an equal exchange is made at the time you turn in your work - NOT sometime down the road.

The radio stations I used to work for had a very sensible policy on barter. They did mostly part cash/part trade rather than 100% trade and would only do trade deals for things they actually had a need for. It seems like common sense but some (especially small) stations tend to be trade happy and will end up with a closet full of laundry detergent or disposable douche just because someone was willing to barter for air time.

Meanwhile, if someone wanted to offer me a 50" 1080p plasma TV in exchange for five or six VOs, i'd do that deal in a heartbeat.

Did you hear about the radio station sales manager who got robbed?
The thief got away with $500 in cash and $1000 in trade

I'm sure those Sanjaya CDs stamped in gold foil with "FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY" have some value, no?

One might even be able to swap them for, say, the relief of being free of them. That's value!

It sounds like VO artists get better deals than musicians. I often used to get people calling me for gigs, where they would say, "there is no pay, but there will be free dinner." Methinks they were taking the minstrel playing for his supper a bit too seriously!

To which you must reply, "The food couldn't possibly be that good."
