Congratulations! Dylan!
My Grandson received his Black Belt just a couple of weeks ago. So Dylan is in fine company!
Keep on kickin' and punchin' and ...

How wonderful! Congratulations to YB! And somebody made a very cool video. What do the colors mean?
The kata/form they're doing that starts at 24-ish seconds into the video is like a more graceful version of the "pinan godan" kata from Shorin-ryu karate - the lineage of all these compositions seems quite complex.
Neat!
p.s. those airborne kicks are terrific. That is something this ol' gal will never be doing.... |

Heh— that "Somebody" would be me. And yes, the boy certainly has air, doesn't he?
The form in Korean is Bassai Dai (pronounced Boss-eye Day)
From the training manual:
Quote: |
Our Tang Soo Do belt system in its progress from white to black represents the cycle of the seasons. Each color stands for a specific stage of achievement. In this way we realize an essential concept of oriental philosophy, i.e., that which is born must grow, reach maturity, die, and leave behind the seeds of a new birth.
WHITE: The beginner's belt color. White represents a primitive stage of development. White also symbolizes purity. Thus, a seed as it lies dormant beneath the snows of winter.
GOLD/YELLOW: Gold/Yellow is the first real stage of growth and development, like the new growth that appears in spring. At this level, a student first begins to reveal their newfound knowledge.
PURPLE: Purple represents new growth, like the spring of the seasons. The member has new knowledge to grow and a sense of Tang Soo Do direction is developed.
ORANGE: At orange belt, students should have a basic understanding of beginning techniques. Orange represents the knowledge that begins to emerge like the budding of a young plant in spring.
BLUE: Blue represents the speedy development of youth as summer arrives. Students at this level are still continuing to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the art.
GREEN: Green represents the speedy development of youth as summer arrives. Students at this level are still continuing to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the art.
BROWN: Brown represents power, stability, agility, weight and wisdom. This stability stage is both mentally and physically analogous to plants which curtail their growth and prepare to flower in late summer.
RED 2 & 1: Red represents blood, life, energy, attention, and control. The students power and techniques begin to bloom and ripen, as they begin to mature as martial artists. Now the student begins the preparation of mind and body for the final step needed to attain the rank of chodan.
MIDNIGHT BLUE #1 to 7th Dan: Midnight blue belt (Black Belt) represents maturity, respect and honor. Our midnight blue is given to the cho dan bo "black belt candidate". The student must now prepare mind and body for the final step needed to attain black belt.
BLACK: Black represents mastery, calmness, dignity, and sincerity. Black Belt is the final stage of one life cycle and the beginning of the next. Thus, we see that it is not only the end of one stage but, more importantly, the beginning of a path which leads up through the ranks of the higher Black Belt to true mastery. |
When you reach Green Belt rank, you must put green trim on your do bahk (workout tunic) top's front edges. You apply new trim each time your rank increases to a new color belt thru brown and red.
When you reach Cho Dan Bo, you take the trim off your do bahk because you are at the lowest rank of a new discipline. You get to put black trim on the front and bottom edges of your do bahk when you receive your black belt. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

WOW! I had to pick my jaw up after that was over. Very exciting for him (at first I missed read the thread as marital arts and was wondering if I even wanted to click), a big congratulations.
DB, you editing is fantastic. Perhaps you can come video and edit one of our play dough sessions?!!? _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Congratulations to Younger Bear. Our middle son, David, just successfully tested for his last stop before black belt. _________________ Be well,

Congrats to Dylan. Very nice, indeed.
At least Mom knows how to select a soundtrack for a video. Hehehe... |

That succession of belt colors looks like the stripe code for resistors.
And I thought I ordered a plate of Tang So Doo at Asian Breeze in Hooksett on Saturday. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Congratulations Dylan!!! Those kicks are fantastic.
DB the song was perfect. It made me want to get up and start kicking but I remained seated until the urge passed. |
