How do you respond when someone asks for a freebie? Do you have any criteria that you follow? Or is it "Pay for talk or take a walk"? (I just made that up.) Smile To be more specific; what do you do with an e-mail, from god knows where, looking for your services?

I judge each case on its merits but as a general rule of thumb I adopt the attitude if they're getting paid then so am I.

I learned a lesson in pitching "freebies" recently. I had offered my services for free on the premise that I would benefit more from the "on air" exposure instead of the token charges. NOT!! My offer was dismissed, and another person (not a VO actor) was given the job. :x

I'm thinking now that a discussion of money should always be part of a contract... it smells of professionalism.

I will have Mr. Banks mantra engraved on a plaque...

The only time I do freebies is for charitable causes.

Or voicing things I really want to do because I like it, like poetry.

The only company I intentionally did free VO for was my brother's.

Agreed. Pro bono VO work in my opinion should be done in this example and also in the case there is a monetary commitment (non refundable deposit) for future VO work.

Same here. I've done freebies for non-profits. People I knew asked me to do them. If it appears in your inbox from someone you don't know, & isn't a non-profit...hmm, maybe not.

I have made charitable contributions to businesses without realising it. <g> The "I can't pay you now because business is slow..." or the folks that just "stiff" you.

Oh! You mean real charities! Of course!
