Anybody running a MOTU interface with a Mac computer? I'm just wondering if the firewire card in the recent Macs is compatible with MOTU interfaces....because the firewire cards in PCs are not compatible and have to changed out.

Rob,

Make sure the firewire card is OHCI compliant. Some PC's offer compliant cards, others do not. I use a MOTU 828 MKII (firewire) with a Behringer Ultragain ADA8000 by connecting the lightpipe output to the ADAT input on the MOTU, and have had no problems.

With the previous statement in mind; IF this does not work and you are buying NEW - consider the new MOTU 828 MKII USB as an alternative.

* Note: By using the Behringer ADA 8000 (without modification) you may lose some (minimal) high frequency definition, but a cost savings of nearly $2000.00 is worth the token frequency loss.

Oh, to answer your question: No, I have never used the MOTU with a Mac.

I already have the MOTU Ultralite, running through Windows XP, and my HP computer required a different Firewire card than the one that came with it, one with a Lucent Technologies chip.

But since I am contemplating a Mac notebook, I wasn't sure about its Firewire card, though I gather that MOTUs are geared more towards Macs than PCs.

As stated, MOTU is and was originally a Mac company. I have stopped my purchases from MOTU since they are now owned by DigiDesign, but that is my choice.

MOTU has designed a very capable 828 MKII with USB connections which may mean I will have to re-think my decision, but it's not likely.

Good luck with the Ultralite. MOTU did make very good equipment in the past, I do not believe DD will sacrifice the reputation of MOTU for their bottom line, but you never know.

I got the Ultralite about 6 months ago....don't know if that was pre or post Digi Designs.....don't know much about Digi Designs either.....

Well the more I peruse my MOTU manual, I would say it's pretty much a given that the Mac Firewire cards are likely to be compatible. I didn't realize how much of a Mac-oriented company MOTU has been (and probably continues to be under their new ownership)

This may not be of any help but I have a 3 year old Motu 828 MkII running into a four year old pre-Intel Mac G5 and they work fine together.
