Anybody use the Sound Devices USBpre? I've heard good things about it, but was wondering if anyone had first hand experience with it. I'm considering it for a traveling set up.
Thanks!

Hi Willie,
Yes I meant Sound Devices. By the way, I fixed it in the post in case someone thinks Willie isn't making any sense! _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

John:
The Sound Devices Mix USBPre is an excellent unit, I highly recommend it.
Outofhear.com has one for sale (possibly two), if used works for you. I personally spec'd and assembled their VO2GO rental kits, so I know they are top notch. It you need the capability to do stereo recordings on the road, it's hard to beat.
However, if you are only using a single mic and don't have the need for additional I/O, and sheer portability while maintaining sound quality is key, then don't overlook the CEntrance Micport Pro. It stands up to the USBPre quite well. Got a couple in stock now. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I have no hands-on with this unit. I had bad experiences with their original version, (NOT the USB 2.0), but I can only hope they improved the USB driver/hardware issues in this version. I've seen several users on VO-BB say they like this newer unit. Only hitch I see is the inflexible routing of the audio returning from your computer. It can only come up on your headphones, not routable to Aux sends. Would be a problem if you are doing a phone patch and need to do playback for the client. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Thanks for the reply George.. and thanks for the seminar at V2008!
I a recent seminar w/James and Penny, he demo'd his previous model Alesis ( the 1.1 USB version in silver) and showed how it can be used to fully interface with a phone patch, and not let the phone conversation get to the actual recording. He has an e-book where he described the process.. I'll see if I can paraphrase it later today and post for clarification and I'll doubler check it works the same ads the previous version.
thanks again for the input!

Jason:
Well, that part is easy enough. Just mute the phone patch and press the "Alt 3/4" monitor button on the control room/headphone section.
But you can't get playback into the phone patch for the client, unless someone else knows a trick. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
