rarely have i been cited as a "happy" person...although i do regularly manage to attain a state of "delirious contentment".

and while i've remained suspicious of the "just do it" philosophy that declares happiness is a choice, i found some thoughts worth saving in a piece by writer Robert Fransecky.

there's more detail at my blog post, http://voices2go.wordpress.com/2008/07/19/happinesswithout-the-5-easy-steps/, which has a link to the original piece, but here are a few gems to consider:

…fear binds us, edits our hopes and diminishes our potential for happiness.
...a neural network that once helped us survive as a species, but now limits our lives.

"edits our hopes". great stuff. was this guy doing audio production in a previous life or what?

and one of his suggested "antidotes":

Happiness can become your default state and not some elaborate life lie by acknowledging your gifts, your lessons, the people in your "cast" who love and teach, tolerate and celebrate you.

for me, that line about the people in our "cast" might just as well have said, "...and all the people you know through the VO-BB, dummy!"

thanks, "cast". thanks, ms. d.

and to all the savvy "expatriates" joining us...this is one of the benefits you can look forward to by being here.

"delirious contentment" to you all.

Rowell,

Beautifully written (no surprise there) and very timely. Thank you. I'm very glad that you're a member of my cast and I'm equally thrilled to be a member of yours.

One of my favorite quotes is "We don't sing cause we are happy, we are happy because we sing" I heard this via Zig Ziglar although I am not sure if he is the originator.

Being a former English lit teacher, I LOVE quotations. I'm feelin' the love here...

My all time favorite person to quote is Benjamin Franklin. What a fun guy he was, and a master of understated wit.

Here's one I think we can learn from:

"Never contradict anybody."

--Benjamin Franklin to Thomas Jefferson
