I'm on vacation for two weeks at our house on KY Lake. I did a Source-Connect session on Wednesday with a client who usually connects with me via ISDN but agreed to do it this way rather than wait til 7/21. My DSL service at the house here is only about 200 kbps upload. We connected fine, but the delay was hilariously slow, like about 5 seconds. Luckily it wasn't a dialogue, but it's good to know Source-Connect will work in a pinch.

By the way, have any of you with Source-Connect upgraded to v3.0? I spoke with their tech support in England, and she rather pointedly told me that they will no longer be assisting with setup for v2.5...

Jim

Jim,

The client who uses Source Connect with me most often hasn't upgraded yet, so I've held off for the time being. But, I have updated my iLok authorization so I can upgrade immediately, if I need to do so.

Jim:
I've encouraged all of my clients to upgrade to 3.0 simply do to 2.5 no longer receiving support and 3.0 is not backward compatible. Outofhear.com has upgrade all of their systems to 3.0 as well. The new features Restore and Replace could make sessions like yours much easier to deal with, as you could run at a very low quality setting for minimal delay and then Replace the recording for your client. However, these features have no effect on users connecting with studios that only use ISDN.
Please contact me off the board if you need more information.

George:

I can understand the advantages of upgrading to the latest version. But the problem is requiring a client to do the upgrade, especially if they're not hot on using Source-Connect to begin with. I have only a handful of clients who run Source-Connect, most of whom also have (and strongly prefer) ISDN, and they don't seem to care a whit about saving the connection cost by using S-C. The only reason my client agreed to use S-C last week was because I don't have ISDN at our vacation home.

I wonder if it's possible to house both versions of Source-Connect on the same computer... Or will S-C merely come to a point where they require (rather than strongly suggest) that everyone booting up v2.5 do the upgrade.

Thanks, Jim

Jim,

When I spoke with customer support at Source Elements the other day, they indicated that the iLok authorization will allow either version and that if you had to downgrade to accommodate a client, all that's required is to uninstall ver. 3 and re-install ver. 2.5.
