I use Adobe Audition 1.5, and 3.0 interchangeably (when I can get 3.0 to not crash my system), but I can't get EITHER of them to autoscroll on playback.

This makes editing VERY tedious. I've spent at least two phone calls with Frank trying to figure this out, and even stumped him.

Here's a screen shot of my settings on 1.5 (3.0 is almost identical). It SHOULD auto-scroll, but it just doesn't seem to want to...and yes, I've tried restarting the program and even re-booting after fiddling with these radio-buttons to no avail.

Thanks!

i don't know why it would matter, but checking my own settings screen, i notice the cursor setting is for i-beam instead of arrow. everything else matches what your screengrab shows.

but if frank can't find a reason, i doubt my simple observation is going to resolve the issue. still...if i didn't mention it and later found out...well.

Sorry Dave, I did not have an answer until now.

Scrolling only works from a set point to a set point which is visible in the Edit View Window or the Multitrack Window when you press play. (i.e.: zoom out, press play, then zoom in for a closer view - if you so desire...)

Scrolling only works for the displayed area when play is pressed...

Does that make any sense???

Kinda... but then I have to do a lot of zooming-out and zooming in for each edit.... right?

Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio scrolls just fine, but if you stop the scrolling with the space bar, it returns to where the cursor was... not where you ARE... so you have to click the mouse first, THEN hit the space bar...

Why is this so hard for these software coders to do it right? (according to my view, at least)

Because if they did it all right the first time there'd be no need for subsequent revisions/upgrades for us to purchase... Wink

Audition works the same way in my experience...when you stop, it goes to where the cursor started (your "in point") rather than what you're looking at.

However, all you need to do to get around that is, while zoomed in and scrolling, just click in the waveform before you press space to stop playback, and then when you resume, it'll start from there.

I'm also wondering why Audition 3.0 would crash your computer. Hmm.

I would find it very annoying if the cursor started where I am rather than where I was, since I often stop the scroll so I can delete from where I was to where I am.

You may also use your F8 key to insert cue points for your edits. After marking all edit points, you may go back to the beginning and start editing.

Courvo

I don't know if SF Audio Studio is set up the same way as SF8.0 but on 8.0 although hitting the space bar takes you back to the cursor, if you hit the ENTER key instead it will stop where you are and continue from that point. You can also set it up in preferences under the general tab to have the space bar or f12 do the same thing.

Don't know if Audio Studio functions the same way - but it's basically the same program with a few fewer features.

If I understand what you're saying, you're describing the old CoolEdit functionality where the playback head would stop as soon as you hit the "other side" regardless of whether you may have changed views since hitting play. That's long gone in Audition, at least V2 that I use. I can autoscroll til the cows come home regardless of what's in my window.

Dave, has this ever worked for you?

In my opinion, they did do it right. I hate the sound forge model that requires me to click. I don't want the view to go back to where I started. I want it to be where I am now, not 30 seconds ago!

So don't bash the developers. They can't help it if no one agrees.

One other thing, have you tried nuking your preferences? Doing so will force audition to recreate them on next boot.

1. Quit Audition.
2. Navigate to the following folder C:\Documents and Settings\ [username] \Application Data\Adobe\Audition\3.0.
3. Important: If you saved your own custom workspaces, copy the UserWorkspaces folder to a new location.
4. Delete the entire contents of the C:\Documents and Settings\ [username] \Application Data\Adobe\Audition\3.0 folder.
5. Start Audition

Just an added reminder, when editing I usually only have (at most) 30 seconds of audio showing on the screen. This small section of time can be zoomed in or out as needed to see what you desire and will scroll easily through the screen.

When I finish editing, I will listen to larger parts to see if I have caught all edits. If not, when I hear them I use F8 to mark somewhere close to the place I need to fix, and then edit what I need on the next pass...

Since I mark (with Fcool as I am recording I can usually zoom in or out as needed to get to the next mark and make an edit as necessary.

I think I'm sorry I started this thread.... something's been lost in translation.

Jeffrey, I wasn't bashing developers (touchy aren't they?) I said "according to my view" to protect me from their wrath.

And besides, you agree with me,.. you hate it when the display goes back to your original play-point, instead of stopping where you are-at-the-moment-down-the-line. 'Didn't understand your retort for that reason.

I don't use AA2.0. I use 1.5 and 3.0. 1.5 has never auto-scrolled for me.

3.0 USED to....but the doggone program is so buggy (causing frequent BSOD) that it stopped doing it too....and I loved it for that.

When I recorded on 3.0 it would crash. So I would record on 1.5, then edit on 3.0. A hassle, yes, but saved time in the end. That was until 3.0 stopped auto-scrolling.... (is anyone following this?)

Jeffrey, thankyou for your post on re-setting preferences. I'll try that.

Melissa, I'm gonna try what you say. I'm using Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 9.0 now. I'd use it exclusively, 'cause I love its interface, but it doesn't show you the wave form AS YOU'RE RECORDING, like AA.

So, in my estimation, no one gets it right...except AA3.0...which is too buggy to be reliable.

Oh, right I guess we do agree. And you know why? Because we're both handsome men. That's why.
