ISDN install epistle #43:

ISDN modem #3 will come from the nice FedEx delivery man Friday.

ISDN modem #1 (purchased off Ebay) was ancient, but I didn't know it. An Eicon Diva SERIAL cable modem will not work with AudioTX. I know that now.

ISDN modem #2 (also purchased off Ebay) was newer, and if you've ever seem 'em has that prehistoric black shell-fish look to it. But it was a Version ONE USB ISDN modem. It doesn't work with AudioTX either. I know that now.

The V1.0 modem sadistically comes with V4.0 driver software, which everyone will flat-out tell you will not work. "That's OK", I said, "I'll just go to the Dialogic website, and download the previous driver", which is said to work fine with the USB modem...according to a very well-meaning and helpful Frank Frederick, who is wrestling with the same issues.

5 install/uninstall sessions later, I found that none of the Dialogic USB ISDN Eicon Diva driver sets work with the V1.0 Eicon Diva USB modem.

Dave Immer of Digiphone who is pretty well recognized by most everyone as being among the top-3 ISDN experts in the country is my answer-man.

I've been back and forth with him all through this. I've resisted buying HIS solution to everything on sheer principle. I knew better. I've come to the expensive conclusion that I'm just obstinate.

HIS solution is to buy the Eicon Diva USB ISDN Modem V2.0 (note the version TWO) for $275. He flat-out told me he's pretty-much purchased all of this version of the modem in North America, since he's found it's the only Eicon Diva modem that will work with AudioTX.

NOW he tells me that. He could have told me that at first...but I was pretty headstrong, and unwilling to listen to him... and there's probably a little part of him that wanted me to suffer so I'd HAVE to come to him to buy the $275 V2.0 modem out of frustration and desperation. V1.0 and V2.0 APPEAR the same to the eye.

All that is just business, and I'll chalk it up to experience.

Now comes the real shockeroo...

Others who have gone down this path tell me that the native Windows XP drivers WORK JUST FINE with the Eicon Diva USB ISDN modem V2.0, that you don't EVEN NEED any DigiPhone drivers. BTW, the V2.0 modem is now on it's way from Dave Immer for $275, plus extra 2-day ground delivery fee.

Great...but here's the real kicker:

Installing the old/new/bad/defunct (whatever you want to call them) Dialogic drivers on your XP CORRUPTS the native Windows XP drivers, so that your computer is rendered useless in recognizing the ISDN Diva Eicon modem with the Windows drivers.

Dave Immer of Digiphone tells me he went through THREE computers to realize that.

"What did you do with those computers?" I asked. He said he set them aside, and can't use them with ISDN anymore. They're ruined.

RUINED....!!!!!!

Yep, you guessed it. All along I've been trying to install the ISDN modem on my precious DAW....my custom-built, lightning-fast, LOADED-with-voice-acting-software in-studio computer.

I asked Dave whether he tried re-installing Win XP as a repair install. He said that gets into a whole different set of challenges he was unwilling to tackle. (I've later found that wouldn't work either)

I also asked Dave if he had considered rolling back his XP machine to a previous RESTORE point. He hadn't thought of that.

I did. A few days ago I rolled mine back a couple of weeks, and tried to install the crappy drivers (before I knew all this). So THAT restore point is shot.

Now I have to go back to an even earlier RESTORE point, to find the native Win XP drivers.

I'm also starting to wonder what the AudioTX return policy is.

That is really my final chance at making this work....short of handing my computer over to my computer guy, and asking him a complete re-format, re-install of Windows XP, and start ALL OVER again with a million software installs....and I haven't even gotten to the point to find out if my ISDN wires are even properly installed and switched.

That's another battle to fight.

Luckily, I still have my armor on.

Whadya think? Got any other ideas? Are you asleep yet? Didja even read this far?

Thanks for listening.

Dave,

I read your post and I am very sorry to hear about your issues. I would not wish these troubles on my worst enemies.....not good at all. I'll keep pulling for you though.

Great GOOGLY-MOOGLY!

Dude.

Seriously?

Yeah installing ISDN already makes me twitchy. Reading that, and full remote recording capabilities over broadband (as standard) can't get here fast enough for me.

Just reading that, I think I'm gonna go have to take a nap...

Adding to my frustration level is the fact that I paid for Qwest to come out again and find that everything is working TO the NT1 (Adtran Ace). New cables, rollback of the drivers, etc, and the culprit seems to be the NT1.

The Ace indicates an Error light with an 8 khz blinking ready light. Qwest shows no impedance on the line with the Adtran connected or shorted - i.e.: no termination.

A call has been placed to Adtran and Courvo has obligingly sent me one of four NT1's he has purchased.

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? I do not see any indication of that as yet.

Update; As I was writing this post the Tech from Adtran called. Result: The Adtran NT1 Ace is old and not only out of warranty, but is broken (newly refurbished unit to boot). Time to buy a new NT1 - stress NEW.

Dang!

Toodles

OMG. It's a good thing you're smart.

The $2600 Zephyr XStream I bought on eBay works great (knock on wood). Plug and play. Is this solution really that much less expensive? I know nothing about Audio TX. I'm so thankful I didn't have to go thru what you guys are. I would have thrown everything out the window days ago and gone to The Gap for a job.

after reading this story, I have to ask:

does anyone on here actually have a dedicated backup solution?

I love Windows restore, but it doesn't always work as advertised.

Best to have a safety net.

dear, dear courvo

it's a credit to your internal fortitude that you're even around to write that sad, sad story. i wonder if i would have made it this far in your place, or would have taken what they used to call "the coward's way out".

it's so frustrating when you think you've played by the rules to get a bargain...only to find there's a whole series of "one more thing" setbacks that keep stringing you along. at some point, you must have been tempted to tally up how much you would have "saved" by just buying a box from telos or musicam.

keep the reports coming in. i don't pretend to understand the tech part, but i'll know a happy ending when i read it...and be cheering right along with you!

Greg,

Every couple of months I clone my boot drive to a backup hard drive using Partition Magic. I keep a couple of them so I have more than one fall back point. If I ever have to roll one back I'd have to do some tweaking to get things back to exactly how I have things "now"; but nothing like the agony of doing a complete wipe and re-install.

Also, I have a full data back-up (all drives, not just just the boot drive) that runs every night to an external drive, with a second external drive holding an older set of back-ups. That runs every night at 3:00 AM on my workstation and a second set of back-ups that runs on my office computer.

I know it's not a complete solution, but does leave me feeling less exposed that when I had a catastrophic crash and no up-to-date back-ups; which is what motivated me to finally get a real solution of some kind in place.

And Dave, my heart goes out to you. I'm amazed you have any hair left after all this.

Thanks, all.... actually, I'm not suffering any more financial loss than a successful AudioTX install.... I know I can recoup my incorrect purchases on Ebay... it's the time lost and the seemingly never-ending series of trials and error that tests one's patience.

Dave:

1) So sorry you're STILL dealing with all of this
2) Since you're a fancy-pants, big-shot TV personality, buy a second computer, put XP on it, get the ISDN working first, THEN install all of your other shenanigans on it
3) If you decide not to do 2), then please skip 3)
4) Armor in the summer in Las Vegas is likely not going to help. Unless you're trying to lose weight.

I'm not really crazy about System Restore...I usually turn it off.

I back up my HD every night like Bob.
