|

Hi All
I am trying to learn better techniques for getting smooth edits in Adobe Audition 2.0
How do you fade in and out of edits so it's not choppy--nice and smooth sounding. Can you draw fades by hand in this program and how do you do it?
How about using the fade in and fade out commands under favorites?
Here's what I am doing now (and I need to tweak it u
1. Expand the size to be huge and highlight the breath (or whatever I want to edit.)
2. Use shift O or shift I command to find the nearest zero crossing point inside or outside the highlighted area.
3. Reduce amplification of the highlighted area.
4. Remove about two third of the space.
Please let me know what works for you. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kathy,
If you want to use the Multitrack view then you can go to "View" and click "Enable Envelope Editing". This will enable you to draw the fades and maybe have a little more control over things.
Good Luck,

Hi Kathy.
You can also do it in the EDIT WAVEFORM VIEW. Highlight the portion you want to fade in or fade out. Then click EFFECTS/AMPLITUDE/AMPLIFY/FADE. There are presets to the right, or you can create your own with the sliders on the left. Careful, however... This alters the actual file (unlike johnny's tip which creates a fade in a mix file, leaving the original file unaltered). If you do it this way, make a copy of it before you do it.

another vote for doing it in multi-track view
click on the volume line at the spot where you want your fade to start
click again where you want your fade to end
drag the 2nd point down to the proper level
you can get a lot fancier - but this will get you started. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

it is much easier (and less harmful to the actual file) to to it in the multitrack view. so you've got 3 votes for that method... i just wanted to give another option. there are many ways to do things in AA (sometimes, too many ways it gets confusing).

Make that 4... although I don't use AA, I use it all the time in Wavelab. _________________ Regards,

Here is an editing trick I learned from Todd!!
Using the Amplify/Fade option in AA, you can create a personalised setting that reduces the volume of breaths and everything else in your selected area. Set the Initial Ampflication at -12 dB, and the Final Amplification at -14 dB. I created a setting like this and named it "breaths". I select the whole space between phrases, starting as close to the end of one phrase and the beginning of the next as the zero points allow, and then apply that "breaths" setting. I find it tremendously useful - thank-you Todd!

Thanks Todd and Mary
I've created the same setting in my program and named it Todd-Mary (in honor of both of you:-)

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I had a question about editing also.
The company I work for is going to start bringing all its editing in-house. To that end, I've been tasked with helping hire a full-time editor to work in our office and spend his/her days listening to my voice.
Question is: what editing software is most often used by the members of VO-BB? Adobe Audition seems to have a strong showing in this thread. Do you folks have any suggestions for the best editing software to use for cutting professional-quality long-form narration? There's no sound effect requirement -- just taking out flubs and sneezes, etc, and some mastering. |

AA and Soundforge seem to be the favorites. Both will do the job well.
There are also some free programs you could try like Audacity, but I've never used these. _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs
