It seems somehow ironic to get the following in my mailbox from
Voice123.com....

From: voice123 ,

>>Dear Talent:

Does your voiceover demo really work for you? AFTRA invites you to the Voiceover Skills Workshop for AFTRA@WORK on Tuesday November 8th, to find our what works in an effective demo and what doesn't.

Join and hear a panel of experience working voice over artists discuss current trends, (etc etc).
RSVP to Michele Caruso at 212.863.4253. Seating is limited, so make sure to make a reservation.
If you have any questions or comments please http://voice123.com/web/common/contact_us.cgi<<

This coming to me from an entity(voice123) that fosters anything but a "union" sensibility toward rate integrity and sustaining equitable standards of compensation. i had no idea voice123 was
an AFTRA-signatory agent to presume to promote such a seminar
LOL. Maybe it's just me but i found it just slightly curious to see
Voice123 presuming any sort of affiliation and/or encouragement
of anything union-oriented, given the forum it provides for the most
low-ball 'anything goes' services and rate quotes imaginable.

Whatever,

Mark E/Mich

Well, I for one am going to this.

Can we give credit where credit is due?

I for one welcome this seminar, and thanks to Voice123 for offering it.

Are you in NYC? I'm wondering if they are sending the invite to NYC folks only.

Plus, what a GREAT networking opp! Smile

I think they must have sent it to everyone because I got it as well and I'm in Toronto. If I were in New York, I'd definitely be going - you're right, it is a great networking opportunity.

I'm listed as a "Union-only" talent with these guys and believe me, as such the number of public leads is minuscule-- and most of the time the client who is looking has no idea under the sun what to expect when they include union members in their talent request.

In ongoing defense if V123, I have gotten some very nice leads that were private.

Sorry - but if you don't have an AFTRA card, you're not getting in.

I confirmed this with Michele at AFTRA.

Maybe V123 wants to make themselves seem pro-active by sending this out to all of their members.
Let me make it clear that this is NOT a Voice123 "offering" - all AFTRA@WORK events are released via press releases to entertainment outlets (like Back Stage for example), but it is still a UNION ONLY EVENT.
Voice123 deserves no credit for this event whatsoever and we all know how much a N/U lowball war that website is - definitely not in keeping with Union ideals.

Sorry.

-Anthony

Interesting, Anthony. Now I think even less of V123 - if that's possible.

The notice went to everyone?

Sending an invitation to people who wouldn't be allowed to attend...
Poo... too bad. That's really not very nice.

Thanks for the info Anthony.

Not only that, they're probably making Michele at AFTRA's job a lot harder, with non-union Voice Talents calling who think they CAN go - like me!

I thought Michele was a Voice123 person, not AFTRA. They did not make that clear.

They're hardly increasing their reputation with the unions by causing this extra telephone traffic for them unnecessarily.

Hi, Michele.

Is the seminar "Getting Heard in the Voiceover Market" on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005
at 6 p.m. a members only seminar?

Thanks!
-Anthony

I even asked an AFTRA member, and they confirmed this as well. Not to even bother, because you can't get in without your union card.
Maybe if V123 had at least attempted to filter out their members that had AFTRA listed, but from what you all are saying, they didn't.

Michele coordinates all AFTRA@WORK events, and this week must be hectic for her because of the inquiries.

In all honesty, though, if I were AFTRA I would've opened this event to the general public (i.e., N/U actors) because it might generate interest in the union. If you're AFTRA and you don't know what you should be doing in terms of demos or the v/o industry in general, then maybe you joined too early.

It's things like this (the mass-non-specific-mailing) that makes the union industry look down upon n/u v/o's. N/U are generally seen as total beginners and not very good, even if many n/u v/o's have been doing this for years and are talented. I was told by a major NYC casting director about 2 weeks ago, "you should stay non-union. I like your read, and to be honest, there aren't many good non-union voice-actors." It's a shame, because we all know that there are many very talented non-union voice-actors, who just need a break or have no interest to join the union at all and are doing just fine.

Oh, well. The saga continues. I'll see you on the other side Wink

The market in the USA and the UK would change if union members, be they SAG, AFTRA or Equity came with a quality assurance certificate. As an Equity member I have the same professional standing as a bareback horse rider or a cabaret dancer.

Lack of talent or specific ability exists within the ranks of union membership. Caveat emptor applies whether a client is looking for a voice on Voice123 or through a list of union members.

...As only V123 can create. Just answer a lead these days. Cluster%^&#@ is a mild description.
