|
|
Hey!
In an effort to remain more anonymous and not have my personal info available to anyone with the motivation to look me up online, I changed the WHOIS data for my registered domains . . . I used Rachel R. instead of my full name and used the phone number and address of the business my dad owns rather than my personal info.
I don't much about this data or how it's used, and was just wondering if I did the right thing??? |

As far as I'm concerned, as long as the data is valid somehow, you are OK. Since the data is easily available, it's not uncommon for spammers and such to harvest that data and add it to their databases.
Of course, ICANN requires valid contact info, so see my first sentence. _________________ Greg Littlefield

I don't know who your provider is, but mine (1and1.com) gave me the option of using them as the "owner". So if you whois my domain, you'll see their name and address. _________________ Jeff

I pay a fee to have my domains shielded by Domains By Proxy. They keep the real data and show their info in WhoIs. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

My Hosting Co. (IX Webhosting) lets you put in anonymous info for the whois listing and they keep the correct info on file should the men in black be concerned and want your contact. Those dataminers go for phone and email when they cruise the whois so ultimately it's probably a good thing for you to be anonymous. Anyone who really is interested in doing business will probably just contact you from your website contact info as any straightforward client or other business should do.
To the rest, it's best, to just say no! |

Hey Rach,
Uh...so should I take down the "Rachel's Shrine and Dossier" page I have up on my website?
Lemme know, cuz the page with your SSN is getting a TON of hits, second only to the pix of you and Miley Cyrus clubbing with Britney and LiLo. _________________ Lou Zucaro
