Network Solutions was "front running".
This is where the guys you use to look up domain availability automatically register for themselves any domain name you search for.

So looking up something like "iloveaparade.com" at NetSol would result in that domain being taken if you didn't register it immediately. So instead of spending $9 for an open .com domain, they'd charge you $25.

The guys at reddit.com had a field day with this last month, doing searches for insane and profane "domains" and seeing NS register them all within 15 minutes.

Just be careful about how you look for a name. It would be silly to lose a good one.

That suspicion has always been in the back of my head.

Yes, except that the normal price at NetSol has been $35!

A similar thing happened to me with one of those "buy an 800 number" websites (but I don't recall which one). You give it certain key words and it gives you a list of possible numbers... like say 800 Hart Vox or whatever. Heh. Select the one you like and suddenly it costs you $20 more than the others.

....which reminds me...

GoDaddy is really pushing the .mobi domains...saying they're the wave of the future as everything moves into hand-held.

I plunked down $9 for my courvo.mobi, but I hafta admit, I'm not sure what I bought.

Anybody else?

Yea, Courvo, I have purchased a bunch of domains there at Godaddy, including voicetalent.mobi, but it's a good one, imho.

I was doing a search for a domain for a friend. It was available, so I told them about it's availability. When we went back to purchase it we got the "domain not available...click to inquire" link. Of course the price had tripled. Three months later it was available again. I guess when they figure they can't "gouge" someone for it, they release it?

I take the moral to be that if you want it, you'd better get it on the first search.

I'm having flashbacks to my grandmother and the Home Shopping Network.

This doesn't really make sense. Are .com domains suddenly going to stop working if we all go mobile? I don't think so.

methinks they're just trying to re-sell a bunch of domains with a new extension now that all the desirable .coms are all but gone.

I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. I just checked and whoacheckmeoutimavoicetalkerguy.com is still available.

Oh, wait, now it's not. Nevermind.
