While setting up my studio post-move, I wanted to try something new but I have a feeling it won't work the way I want it to... any technical expertise is appreciated:

I have a Mackie 1202-VLZPro mixer... I want my mic chain to be:

Mic > dbx286a > mixer > saffire firewire audio interface > PC.

So far, so good. What I WANT to be able to do is hook speakers up to the Mackie to monitor the Saffire's output while editing. Is there a way to do this sans feedback?

Thanks!

Chris,

If you can get an unbalanced line out from the audio card, route it to the "tape" inputs on the 1202. You can then send that input to the monitor speakers. At least that's how I have my 1402 set up.

The way I setup my client's systems that don't have their mixer in the booth is like this. Connect the monitor speakers to the control room outputs of the mixer. Take the return of the Sapphire and bring it back in through a stereo channel. Leave the Sapphire's channel MUTED (AKA Alt 3/4 bus). In the monitor section of the board, choose to monitor Alt 3/4. Now you can monitor playback and have control over the volume from the channel fader. Basically, you've created a "mix minus". This same technique works for connecting a Zephyr to the 1202, as well. The Mackie has 3 pairs of Main outs, very handy. Send the 1/4" pair to your audio interface's inputs, and the XLR's to a Zephyr, or example.

Chris,

I have essentially the same chain as you, minus the saffire firewire (I have a Mackie Satellite) and I have mine connected the same way as George described. This had worked great for me.

Hey Chris,

Seconding what George said. I feed the input of my editor (MBox 2) with the alt 3-4 bus of my Mackie (an LM3204)...then bring the editors output back to a channel to feed the regular stereo bus for headphones and monitors.

The only downside can be latency...there's plenty of workarounds for that though.
