Aaaacccchhhhkkkk! One of my monitors just crapped out on me... it's a pretty shade of pink with some other colors and is almost usable... if ya like pink.

Guess it it time to buy a new monitor...

my wife just posted some Dell monitor coupons at http://www.qponcentral.com/store.asp?store=Dell

Full disclosure: my wife is an affiliate and earns 1% commish if you use her links. Let me know if you buy something and I'll ask her to donate it to the VO-BB fund.

Frank I'm sure you're savvy when it comes to this stuff, but I will throw in that I've had nothing but good experiences with Samsung LCDs for years. even the first one I bought some 6 years ago is humming along just fine.

I will say that I prefer certain ranges of their products to others. For instance, I love this range...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8400456&type=product&id=1179877503230

...but I'm not as crazy about this one...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8439442&type=product&id=1183160137115

It's not really to do with anything except the stand / bezel...the former is fantastic. The latter, not so much.

Frank,
If you still like CRTs, come by my house. I have 2 - 19inch sitting in my garage I need to get rid of.

I am still using CRT's but need to move onward and upward... the key to all of it... I am cheap... putting all my funds to something else right now...

So. I might have to use coupons, and anything else I can get my hands on... I just hate the idea of going back to ONE monitor... I am spoiled.

i just read today that dell takes back for free any dell computer when they're retired or you trade up. free shipping, too. they'll also take other brands; you pay freight.

Diana brings up a good point. Make sure you get rid of the dead one properly. We don't need any more mercury in our landfills.

what's gonna happen to all those "analog" television sets when only HD is, uh, usable? admittedly, i pose this question knowing nothing whatsoever about any of this newfangled stuff.

most days , i wonder why i pay for cable tv. the (way old) set hasn't been turned on since late 2007.

If you don't buy a DTV-compatible TV set, you'll be able to get a set-top box that will downconvert the DTV signal to NTSC (our current, outgoing television standard).

I believe some cable and satellite boxes will do this as well.

Did that answer your question, Diana? Wink

Frank, try Costco online. We got a smokin' deal on an LCD and I keep seeing them pop up from time to time.

i just did a project for a local client --- today as a matter of fact who destroys, recycles and properly disposes of such things. to quote the copy:

XXXXXXX uses a 100 horsepower pulveriser to destroy electronics and other products that may contain sensitive material or items that are harmful to the environment. What can … and SHOULD be recycled? Computers, Monitors, Printers, Keyboards & mice, TVs and Cell Phones just to name a few! The XXXXXX pulverizer allows for controlled output sizes and can handle nearly any item … even bowling balls! XXXXXX also destroys CDs, film and x-rays among many, many other items.

SO --- there ya have THAT.

Todd,

Please don't pulverize my bowling ball. I really like it and it was a gift from my son Eric to me for Christmas 2 years ago.

Nothing says you have to use just one LCD. You might as well go with a wide screen model though if you are going to start with one. I needed one that was good for gaming as well so I was picky about what I purchased. LG makes a couple of nice models that are fast (2ms) with good contrast ratio (3000:1). Reasonable too. I'm happy with my purchase. I see plenty of of the Dell Ultrasharp monitors on campus, all very good as well.
