Where we are on the north east coast of Scotland this is what just below $400,000 will get you.

In central London for the same money you may just about get a one bedroom/studio flat.

What sort of place would the same money get you in your area?

I'm meeting the guy who is selling this Antillean baby for approximately the price you mentioned... What you see in the upper left corner is also part of the house... it's big. It's currently a vacation rental villa, and quite a nice investment for it's really popular amongst wealthy Dutch and US sunlovers to hide for a few weeks. And this is what you see from the balcony.

In my area, it would get you the place I'm in right now. 3bd 1.5 bath condo, The complex is right across the street from the school. We have use of the association pool. Large patio area in the back that leads to the 2 car garage. We've been in here for a little over 2 years. Unfortunately, we pretty much bought at the peak of the market, and prices have fallen since. Plan on being here for quite a while, though. Some people downsize once their kids are grown and move out - I just like to think I've downsized already.

Here in the Chicago burbs, that amount will get you vastly different homes depending on which burb you're in.

In the city, however, I believe "cardboard box" is about what you'd be looking at. But hey, at least it'll have "TRUMP" printed on the side of it...

half an acre, 2800 s.f., screened-in porch, hot and cold running cats, off the beaten path

And this is about how it looks right now, after five successive snowstorms in the past three weeks.

One of the Bob's will likely know more about this than me...but a search on the internet showed $400,000 will get you a lot of house here in Charlotte!

It might take me a while to find a picture, but that amount of money would likely get you a nice chunk of land, or something beautiful by the lake. I do know that my favorite house in Charlotte is for sale now. It is a gorgeous, huge house sitting on multiple acres and is just under $1 million. Needless to say- I'll continue dreaming!

In my neighborhood, $400K won't even get you a quarter of an acre lot. However, if you go a little further away from the beach, you can get a decent place for $400k.

Mind you, when we bought our place almost eight years ago, we only paid $235K... it was a complete dump, and we fixed it up (like completely overhauled... added a second story, etc.). Still, you won't find anything around here for that now. Even with the real estate bubble bursting.

These days most Dutch speakers speak better English than English people do.....did that make sense.

Phillip, they do sell things differently there than here. One of the things we use to value a house and display prominently in adverts is the square footage of the house and the property. From the photos I'm guessing there's not much land and the house looks to be below 2,000 sqft., so standing alone I'd say the price is high, but because it's so close to the quaint harbor that brings it back up a fair price I'd guess.

Edo, your place looks incredibly undervalued. It looks fabulous.

Here in Phoenix 400K would buy you almost 3,000 sqft of house and very little land in a development 15 miles from the center of the city. Here in the pleasant, 60 year old residential area I live in five miles from the city center it'd get you 2,000 sqft and a quarter acre (10,000 sqft) of land.

John McCain and his wife (who has the money) just bought 2 new condos which they'll join into one in a high rise building near the high class Biltmore shopping area, and if I remember correctly it'll be about 5,000 sqft for about 4 million dollars. They'll be living about a mile from my house, but light years away in perceived value.

My sister lives in Glendale and she says prices in her neighborhood (middle-class, about 2200 sf on 1/8 acre) have skyrocketed lately. I wonder why...

Here is our home in Charlotte, the week that we bought it almost 5 years ago now.

It's market value is around $265,000. Less than a quarter acre of land and about 3,400 square feet of living space.
