OK...so with all this discussion on mics...
Let's say you start out with a decent $300 mic...you get work...you get repeat clients...they are happy with your work & keep coming back..... and you are actually making a living wage as a full time VO! (YAY!!!)
Then you get gear envy!
Do you keep using the same mic for repeat clients & use the new mic going forward or do you switch to the new mic & move forward from there for all clients?
Right now, I'm not looking to switch, ...I was just wondering what others' experience has been!

When I upgraded and had to record for regular clients, I recorded with the new mic and sent an email with it telling them that I was very exited because I'd upgraded and loved my new sound. They all agreed with me, nobody asked for the old mic back, it's not been a problem.
It would have been a nightmare to keep switching mics. There was a reason why I upgraded.

I've upgraded several times. Nobody has ever asked for the old mic. I even have a client whose project keeps spawning scripts and I think I'm done with it and then they send more stuff. I told them that if necessary I would record some of the old scripts over again with the new mic, but they don't seem to care. Even with the PBS project I switched mics part way through and they didn't care. I had the old mic in case they did care, but they didn't. So yeah, let clients know you've upgraded, keep the old mic for a while (or forever, as a back-u and you should be fine.
Watcha thinking about getting? |

One of my mics died while I was in the middle of a multi-part project. By great luck I had just gotten a new one, so I swapped it in and sent the files off. I provided a note to the client saying that I'd switched. He didn't seem to hear the difference. But, I figured it was the right thing to do to tell them. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

What kind of mic switch are you looking for? If you and your clients like your mic go for a mic preamp upgrade first. You'll still have your sound, but much more vibrant. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

In 7 years of having my own studio I've only had one client ask what mics I was using and it didn't really matter to him in the long run. The only problem I can imagine is if you change mics during a long form narration such as an audio book.
Most clients don't care so long as it sounds good. Some don't care at all. I've heard audio books where the talent must have recorded in four different places, including a couple of chapters done in a hard-walled room with computer fan noise in the background.

sort of OT - BUT - i listened to an audio book from a major publisher recently - read by a major hollywood star - and the read and the quality SUCKED! hollow --- big sucking breaths ... i just couldn't believe how crappy it was.

Yeah, I think part of it is that WE are so concerned with the sound that we THINK we should have or would LIKE to have, and our ears are much more fine-tuned to differences.
I'm not going to be switching anytime soon. Like I said, I'm getting consistent work, clients have gone so far as to compliment my sound, so no need to switch right now....like I said, this just started as...gear envy!!!
Thanks for ALL your input! I really helps with what I'll eventually do when I DO "upgrade"....basically, it seems, for my own edification!

I'm in the "Anthony" frame of mine. I've never had a client mention mics at all. But I do make a note of which one I used for a client/project. That way if a change comes up for the project I can match the audio of the original file(s). Then on the next new project I'll add the newer mic or pre. |
