If I plug a USB mic, such as an MXL.008, straight into my computer's usb port, is the sound still dependent on the sound card I'm using? (I'm recording on GoldWave.)

Rob,

It shouldn't. The USB mic becomes its own "sound card" in that case. At least for the purposes of recording. Now, you might have to use your internal sound card to edit the audio, especially if your USB mic doesn't provide a headphone jack or other audio output.

The short answer, NO.

The USB mic has it's own application which will be defined in your recording software, just like your normal soundcard. You will simply select the USB source.

Great!

I really like the sound of the MXL.008 on the VOMicTest site.

Could I work up to doing regional paid work (dry) with just that mic and GoldWave (ie, no mixer or pre)?

Yes ... I am cheap.

Rob,

In my opinon, (and you know what they say about opinions) you could do really well with the USB 008. It does really sound good. My suggestion would be to make sure you have a good audio editing software package to fine tune your final output if needed.

Thanks for the mention of the VO Mic Tests page. It's really a group effort with a lot of help from many members here. We're all learning from each other's experiences.

Rodney Saulsberry mentions having used a Blue Snowball USB mic to record national promos for Josh Groban and others. So, I guess the answer would be, absolutely.

The VO Mic Test site is the Bomb. I love the way the USB 008 sounds on that site. It makes me second guess my purchase of the Snowball. Good on ya Willie.
