|
|
Two years ago I started with PT... I've come back full circle to it again. 'Looking hard at it, 'cause I'm about to dive into Source-Connect.
Pro-Tools is equipment-specific, no?
I have the M-audio version with PT 7.4
That's M-audio....NOT M-box.
Anyway, I seem to remember being able to record audio in stereo if I wanted to. Now I can't coax a stereo recording out of Pro-Tools' no matter what I do (and believe me, I've tried).
I've set up my inputs in stereo. Everything SAYS stereo, just not the wave-form.
I suspect it has something to do with my M-audio interface, NOT Pro-Tools itself.
The GUI for the M-audio control panel is pathetic, cryptic, arcane, and just plain confusing.
I'm at a stand-still...out of ideas.
Anybody?

Don't go back to the dark side! Audition 2+ supports VST plugins of which Source Connect is supposed to be.

Yep. If you don't have digidesign hardware and try to run Pro Tools, it will throw up an error and quit. Gotta love it.

Do you need to record in stereo? Unless your mic is stereo, the answer is no. If the client wants a stereo file, then simply convert it to one after you're done recording it in mono. _________________ Jeff

Dave,
You don't say which M-Audio device you have, specifically. I'd be happy to dig around the M-Audio site, but it would help to know for which documentation I should look. _________________ Be well,

Hey CourVO-
I pulled out my "ProTools for Dummies" book and looked this up, which states you need to go into your encode settings when you set up a new session, where you'll be able to select the mode for recording. You may have the default set to mono if you open up a previously recorded mono session- But in a new`session, but you can select stereo, joint stereo, force stereo and mono. (my version offers stereo interleaved) For VO I use mono mode, and it takes less space and is faster to upload .
To quote, "The stereo mode consists of two mono tracks. With the stereo mode, you retain all your stereo information. The drawback is that your two tracks are at half the bit rate of a mono version using the same bit rate setting- so they don't sound as good. For example if you encode at 128 kpbs, each of your stereo tracks is actually only 64kbps....the resulting file is twice as large as the mono file, has no better sound quality, and takes longer to download. Stereo is a good choice if you have a good song with complex stereo panning effects...."

You guys are the best.... I should probably give up on stereo...
Ya see.... I don't have to, or even WANT to record in stereo. I almost never do. But I'm one of THOSE people. It's supposed to be able to record in stereo, therefore I will pursue this obsessively until I GET it to record in stereo.
Jeff,
Yes, Pro-Fools Frank Frederick told me months ago Audition 2.0 is theoretically compatible with a VST like SC.... But he doesn't like 2.0 either, and has talked me out of it. I don't really want to spend the money on AA 3.0
Wanna share?
Bob,
M-Audio Firewire Solo. sorry 'bout that.
Bobbin,
Many thanks....I'm looking at my preferences. Pro-Tools for Dummies, huh...
Frank'd love that!

Dave,
I'm going to toddle off to bed in a few minutes, but here's something to check. When next you create a new session, in the Pro Tools New Session dialog box, look at the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog, the one labeled "I/O Settings."
Pull that down and be sure you select Stereo Mix from the options there. Of course, it might be the only option, but just in case. In the morning, I'll do a bit of digging in the support area at the M-Audio site to see if I can come up with any suggestions for the settings for your interface.
One last thought, on the Source Connect front. Source Elements does offer a utility, called Source Elements Desktop, essentially it's just a small VST host program. You can download it from here...
http://www.source-elements.com/Desktop/
And then be sure you have the VST version of Source Connect; plus you'll need the iLok USB key and download your authorization to it. As I understand it, that Desktop utility will give you full I/O for Source Connect. That's an option if you want NOT to deal with Pro Tools. _________________ Be well,

**************BREAKING NEWS***********
This just in.
Bob Souer sleeps.
In a statement released publicly on an Internet Bulletin Board called The VO-BB, voice-actor extraordinaire, ubiquitous blogger, internet saint, and international bon vivant Bob Souer actually ADMITTED he does, in fact, sleep.
Officials are unsure if this is an isolated incident...a once-a-month occurance, or merely a ruse to throw off his competition. However, in an unprecedented burst of sanguine candidness, the Charlotte-based VO actor confirmed that he was indeed going to "toddle" off to bed.
Updates as they become available. _________________ Dave Courvoisier - Las Vegas, NV

I kid! I kid!
(sorry Bob, couldn't resist) If you'll remember, I posed the very question of your alleged never sleeping in a previous Voice-Acting in Vegas blog.
Ahem....anyway... you ARE a saint for taking the time. Although I'm still a big un-fan of the M-Audio interface...I'm now convinced that is NOT the problem. My BRAIN is the problem.
Indeed, I have found what you told me, and what Bobbin told me to be the case. I was operating out of an old session that was apparently set-up for mono. I would like to think there must be a menu somewhere that lets me switch it to stereo... but.... you know.... WHATEVER.
What I DON'T know about Pro-Tools would actually fill a book thicker than PRO-TOOLS FOR DUMMIES!
Also....I have already downloaded the Source-Connect desktop, but haven't pulled the lever on the purchase of SC just yet. But thanks for the admonition about the VST version

Dave,
You're welcome and thank you for the good chuckles this morning. As for photos of me "toddling", Jeff, those will be very few and far between, I think. _________________ Be well,
