I've just opened up my shiny new M-Audio Sputnik mic, and want to hook it up right away to use on a project this afternoon. Then I had the thought, I know that speakers and other gear often benefit from "breaking in," what about microphones?

You'll at least want to let the tube warm for a bit but yes it will get better as you use it. You might want to call Maudio and see if they have a recommended break in. The capsule will also have some break in too.

while i was researching replacement tubes for my mic, i noticed one manufacturer mention it was okay to use right away, but that leaving it on for 10 hours would fully break in the new setup.

Specifically with "tube microphones" you will need a break-in period. With condenser and electret mic's - not so much, but all microphones will "loosen up" with use. (What GP said - dittos)

Whatever microphone you buy - play with it, turn it on and let it warm up for the first few days... let the microphone accommodate to your environment.

Good luck,

Toodles
