telescopes?
i bought this dude at goodwill for $5 ... it's all cast-iron, wood & steel - really solid and it came in a really cool wood box with a brass label that reads: Sears Discoverer, model no. 4 6305-A, equatorial refractor telescope.
lots of cool $@#t in the box - but i have not been able to make it work.
any ideas? _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Actually Todd,
Good luck with that.
Brian & I have a telescope that we just can't seem to get to work either!
It's not as easy as it looks in those stalker movies!
(not that I'd know anything about that....)

mr. kafer has a very good point - it MAY be busted - but i don't think it is. i think i'm just putting it together wrong. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Start with the weakest lens in the daylight and focus on somthing like a mailbox down the street. Don't try to use the real powerful lenses until you get the feel of it. Check out the moon for your first night time attempt, again using the weaker lenses. Get away from as much ambient light as possible. I have an old brass telescope I keep focused on my bird feeder. Get out in the country where it's really dark for best results.
Good Luck....it's fun

That looks very similar to the one I had as a kid. It was from Sears but I don't recall the model. Anyway, I believe there is a lens cap on each end of the big tube, make sure you've removed both. JJ is right, use the weakest lens first and fiddle around with it. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

I'd start with just one of those eyepiece lenses first to see if you get anything from that. Try the one with the lowest maginfication. Then go up from there and add others.
I wish I was close by. I love telescopes. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

The problem might be if you don't have a Sears store near you, how can you discover a Sears? Also, I don't think you're very close to the equator either.
All seriousness aside, if you were still getting nothing or now you're getting partial images, make sure the refractor mirror inside the scope is still there and aligned properly.
I believe I saw a used Sears Refractor Mirror Alignment Kit on EBay for $500 the other day.
