I'm adding some more acoustic foam to my recording chamber. I would like to be able to remove it when I build my fancy studio sometime in 2008 (or 2009 or 2010). You know when you get a new credit card or ID card in the mail, it's always affixed to the envelope inserts with some kind of snotty stuff that you can easily peel away? It sticks to the paper and the plastic card without apparently degrading either one. Anybody know what that stuff is? That's what I want to use.

Unless somebody has a better idea.

You could use double-sided adhesive tape... leaves no glue stains after removal. That transparent rubbery stuff you were referring to... I've seen it used with electrical glue guns (for lack of better word) and must be widely available in hobby shops. They also use it to glue fabric.

Wait! Just found something similar here!

Hope this helps...

M,

I think it's just rubber cement.

When it dries it gets that snotty consistency. Great fun for the kids when they think dad didn't blow his nose well enough.

I was thinking the same thing about foam, but I don't know if Rubber cement would peal away from the foam unless you have some backing.

Thought about velcro?

Edo, I am not getting anything from that link.

If it's rubber cement it is clear rubber cement. I've never seen it in a store, but I haven't looked either.

Craig, velcro is a good idea - I actually have some strips of the very stuff, with adhesive on the back. Eventually it will lose its stickiness, but it just might tide me over! Thanks!

The "glue" you're looking for is called Glue Dots.

No residue or mess left behind like with double-sided tapes and hot melt glues, for a polished look that doesn’t take away from the overall package.

Weird... it still takes me straight to the glue gun I was searching for at http://www.homedepot.com...

Here's another... comes in a kit. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100384721&categoryID=502487

Good luck!

Cool,

That makes it a lot less messy than slathering rubber cement about.

I was witness to one incident with double sided tape. The tech put some up for temporary placement, but when he took the foam off it pulled the foam apart and the tape pulled paint off the wall.

The glue dots, if they will stay attached to the foam, might just be the ticket.

Our audio gear guy, - the one Connie and I talk to in SD told me about "Foamtak" spray adhesive from Auralex: It's not "snotty" in its consistency, but it does smell pretty intensely right after application. It does work well. Just don't inhale!

$20 per can... covers 96sq/ft... and

Foamtak can be applied lightly so that your foam is removable, or it can be applied heavily for a more permanent bond.

... not bad.

You weren't far off in your description, Mary. Smile

Also referred to as booger or fugitive glue, Glue Dots® from Gluefast – the largest stocking distributor of the adhesives on the East Coast – come in different strengths and sizes, easily fitting the needs of all direct mail companies.

That's ALL I've ever used. Trying different glues just tended to melt or damage the foam. Foamtak is adjustable because the more you spray the harder it will stick BUT if you put on only one light layer it works almost like velcro for temporary placements.

Highly recommended from Mr. Anthony Mendez.

i use it, too, (the spray) and when i needed to move (and then return--another story), i took down the foam easily, sanded it out, repainted, and collected rent.

now, my foam is up with quilting pins, which do NOT work well, but are temporary because ... well ... that's another story, too.

FWIW, forget the glue if you ever plan to move or remodel...

Instead go with "T-pins" to hold the foam in place. (so called because they look like a long skinny letter T) They're used for many purposes: sewing, florists, hobbyists and come in different lengths but work perfectly for attaching acoustic foam to a wall or ceiling. I got mine from Hobby Lobby for about $3 in a couple of different sizes.

I've not tried this but---Is this workable? Attach foam to a large piece of heavy cardboard/s and put cardboard against the wall. Can use a couple of nails to tack board up or what about picture hangers for back of cardboard?

dave--those T pins are also known as quilting pins, and in my studio, no dice, really, unless one wants a very temporary solution. or they're inserted into sheet rock that has give. mine does not. Cry
