Peace on Earth, good will toward men.
A greeting card sentiment that seems like a long forgotten remnant of our idyllic youth? Prototypically Shultzian in a rather arcane sort of way.
Since Linus (as one of the Three Wise Men) first uttered these words almost 45 years ago, A Charlie Brown Christmas has left an indelible impression of the true meaning and spirit of the Holidays on several generations world-wide.
Linus’ line is actually a paraphrase of the last verse in a series found in the King James Bible (1611), long considered by scholars as being the least politically correct of all.
The Latin text has it, `et in terra pax hominibus, bonae voluntatis". So for you purists (and lawyers), the phrase properly rendered is:
"PEACE ON EARTH TO MEN OF GOOD WILL".
In these turbulent times Peace on Earth would be considered nothing short of a miracle. Yet miracles happen every day.
So, the potentially miraculous promise of this quaint wish ultimately could come down to something as simple as a commitment by each and every one of us to be men and women of good will.
Imagine the possibilities!
May your life be imbued with the joys, the warmth and the true meaning of this Holiday Season all year-round.
Thank you all.

Frank, you brought a tear to my eye.
I know you didn't mean to, but THAT particular phrase ALWAYS reminds me of my dad.
Papa used to wake me up in the morning with Latin citations, and that one in particular, at this time of the year, was one of his favorites. It annoyed him to no end that the translation had been altered, as it was his heartfelt belief "men of good will" especially should be honored,
Thanks.
I wish you Peace as well!

It makes the meaning quite different. I think maybe we should all start a movement to get it changed back....if for no other reason than to make Liz' dad happy. I know it's gonna have to change for me....from now on it's peace on earth to men of good will |

OK...now THAT was really sweet. Thanks Greg!
Actually, January 30th will mark 5 years that he's been gone, but I KNOW he's up there discussing the meaning of life with Aristotle, Cicero, Plato and Seneca & having a blast!

Not many people know the true literation of the text. I salute your Dad for his knowledge and respect his image for you.
My father, my Dad was not a well learned man, but he taught us the value of knowledge, the phrase "Peace on earth and good will to men" was one of his pet peeves also. In a way, this is my idea of sharing the respect I have for him.
Bless you all.
