Probly too late for some to catch...but if you're up, or can Tivo, a segment called "Talking Points" will air sometime during the Sunday Morning show that focuses on how actors are taught various dialects for movie roles....

Wow, I am so sorry to have missed this. Brett, thanks so much for posting - I will be on the lookout for a repeat showing.

You beat me to it Brett!
It was a good segment on dialect coaches.

The Boston Globe ran a story some years back about the dialect coaching that Nicole Kidman went through for her role in "Cold Mountain." It was fascinating and sent me on a Googling tour through various websites that talk about pronunciations. One site (down now, unfortunately) had little samples of various British English dialects and a long discourse on Received Pronunciation.

Anyway, Nicole's coach broke down her lines into phonetic units for her to practice, and had some CDs made for her to listen to of the accent that he wanted. It made me appreciate the mental and verbal prep she had to go through.

I saw the segment, and while it was interesting (it basically said actors often use dialect coaches to learn or unlearn accents) there weren't a lot of great tips. The best was if you want to imitate a South African accent keep the middle of your tongue close to the middle of your hard palate. It works.
