From V123:

Quote:
Voice must be deep, powerful voice... easy to recognize on air. I t could have a "slight" Souther twang, but very negligible.

We are looking for exclusivity and a buyout for a two year term. Your voice should not show up in any other local or national spots during the term.

Will produce 2-3 spot per quarter plus voice over for phone system, dvd, etc.

With audition tape we will need a buy out price for the service and exclusivity.

$200 per spot

Give up your livelihood for $200 a month. Where do I sign up?!!!!!

It is beyond me why there is no quality control on that site. They have the amazing opportunity to educate voice-seekers and what do they do? Nuttin'.

I just followed up with V123 on this ad to make sure the seeker knew what they were asking. V123, to their credit, double checked with the client. The client said they have a low budget, but that's what they want. So, it's up to a talent's own discretion on whether to audition for it.

As of this writing 11 people have auditioned.

That's incredible. Sounds like there's some "talent" out there just as clueless as the seeker.

We've established that no one would do the work for the amount the client suggests, so how much would you charge?

They're looking for an exclusive which means the voice artist will do no other work for two years. Factoring in a serious discount, my price would be around $700,000. Go on, try a genuine bid, see what you come up with.

Philip,
You sent the quote in USD$. Is that taking into account the roughly 2:1 value of the British pound vs the US dollar? Do you make ajustments for the country of request's comparative currency rate when doing international work or do they pony up to the value of the brit pound?
hmmm... maybe this is a silly question because, obviously, your services are worth what they're worth but, considering the drastic diff in currency value, this could put you outside the competitive market competition with locals in the other country. I'm just wondering what your take is on this?

Cheers!

hmm... and sorry if this is a thread jack...(not intended)

I do take into account the currency. A job in the UK charged at £250 would be charged to a client in the USA at either £250 and they do the currency bit at their end or I will do it here so that means $500.

The truth is that I don't compete. If someone wants me to do a job I tell them how much it will cost them, not how much I should charge them relative to other voices/countries/markets and any other variables.

If you are selling "A voice" the market decides the price because of the degree of competition etc. If you are selling "Your Voice" then you set the price as there is no competition. Do a web search for a Philip Banks voice cheaper than me.... Don't you just love monopolies!

So then it becomes a matter of marketing so that seekers know what is unique to your voice/delivery, etc.? What did you find worked best for this "Branding", etc. in your earlier days, before you became .. well .. one of the "legends" of the VO world?

... and More Cheers!!

I've been sitting here for a few minutes thinking about your question and the best answer I can come up with is "Under promise - Over deliver".

You need to work towards producers knowing what to expect when they book you. On a bad day you deliver up to expectations, on a good day you really pull something out of the bag. If you have or are thinking about branding statements or slogans, get rid of them. You are your brand. The sound and the name are as one - You are the sound and the sound is your name, the name and the sound are as one. Very Zen.

If I ever become a leg end (polite for foot) I'll let you know.

Underpromise and over deliver...
...I have an monopoly on my voice. I can charge what I want...
...You are your brand...

Got it.

I'm gone...

with a nod to Do The Right Thing.

Mr. Banks could be the worst VOA in the world in practice, and I would still take his wisdom to heart. Fantastic stuff.

In my mind, their use of the word "Should" means "optional"

Thank you, Philip!

So, if I’m understanding what you’ve said in this thread, in combination with things you’ve said in others, to first get your foot in the door, you did not using a branded slogan, image or similar things that might allude to your focus, attitude, differentiation, etc. … you simply were persistent, consistent, (stubborn?), yeah, indefatigable until there were finally ears hearing you. When they would finally give you the opportunity to prove yourself, they would find that you had within you the concept, attitude and action of, “Under-promise, Over-deliver” and they would solidly mark this in their minds regarding you because, although many know of this concept, there are seemingly few that practice it and yet fewer that do so on a consistent basis. They are happy to spread the word about you to others. The seed is planted, sprouts and momentum is gained as it strains toward the sun. Really, no strain … just a pleasant stretch for the plant just does so naturally.
It is as it is..
Zen.
