Well I just got the Telefunken AK 47 tube mic in the other day. I won't go into a big spill about it but it is one great mic. If your thinking about adding to your mic locker, definitely try one out. A sample is below with the Avalon M5 pre no processing at all. There's a dry cut and the final video version as well. Music's a little too loud on the video but hey, I didn't mix it.

Russ, I hear a little extra added "dimension" and it sounds great. Perfect for that particular read.
Rich, I guess we'll have to get an AK-47 if we want to sound like that, huh?

I like the C-4 myself, tends to exagerate the "Plosives" though!

| Anybody tried Peluso 2247 short body ? Some folks told me that those two (AK 47 and Peluso 2247) are somewhat similar for getting rich voice .... any opinions ? |

$1600 isn't that bad for a mic anymore. That said, of the two 2247 variants, I find the standard 2247 (which is cheaper than the LE series and runs about $1400, compared to the 2247 LE, which is $1600 or so) to be the better choice for VO.
Both the 2247 and the AK47 are good tube mics for VO. However, the 2247 is definitely a noisier mic (both are noisier than most the R0de tube mics, not to mention higher-end and boutique mics), which depending on the application can be used to good effect. The main difference I've noticed by listening to tracks is that the AK47 seems to sound more like what I expect of a vintage mic, whereas the 2247 does not. Both are great mics in their own rights, and I'm really looking forward to trying one out for myself next week.

Hey guys and gals,
The Telefunken R-F-T series microphones are a great idea for the small studio setup that needs a "BIG" sound without breaking the bank!
The AK47 has an extremely warm tone that is very smooth and "round". It has a somewhat darker top-end, which gives it more of a vintage feel. It has a really exaggerated "proximity effect" (boost in low-end frequencies in sound sources close to the capsule) which is a highly sought after texture for vocals.
I like using the AK47 on a singer (or Voice actor) that wants to hear back the "velvety" tone from his/her voice. I find that most of the time trying to get this effect from a microphone using other means (compression, tape emulation, EQ..etc..etc..), just ends up smearing the original tone in the first place. I will record DRY, just Mic to PRE and balance the tone from the Pre-amp.
It is best to choose a mic that will work with the artist (or sound source) first, before trying to "FIX IT IN THE MIX".
The AK47 is a mic that works well with any pre, as it has a high-output and low-self noise (noise-floor of the mic) You will not have to run your pre-amp as hot, resulting in less noise overall.
The M16 has a slight difference in frequency response. It has less proximity effect and is not a dark sounding as the AK47. It is slightly brighter and has a tad more presence and "cut-through". This can be better for applications that don't call for such a "hyped" low end "girth".
I find that both microphones have a "pre-washed" vibe with a hint of updated sonic quality that todays digital recordings demand.

Thanks very much for the info--although it reads like an ad piece.
As the vast majority of posters and readers here are most interested in how the mic responds to the speaking voice, it would be most appreciated to hear examples of copy on that mic and perhaps a comparison with the other.

hey Adam, good to see you on the board.
Having listened to some of Russ's clips, the assessment of the AK47 that Adam gave is pretty spot on. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to hear the M16 when I did my mic shootout, but maybe next time I'm up in that area I'll get the chance
PS: Adam, I'm frigging loving the pre and Horch... damn things work great.
