Yours and His Productions

Judas Priest!

They had a spot in Dan O'day's newswletter.
I've got to get in his shirt about that.

Actually, Jesus Christ. Quite literally. Clicking around the site, they seem cater to non-profit Christian radio. They generally don't have huge budgets from the get go.

I figured that from the Yours and [capital H] His name.
Be their Christian bent as it may, they are marketing themselves as the Next Cheap Thing in voiceover in Dan O'Day's newsletter. to wit:

What else in the name of "Christ" and "Christian" are they gonna come up with? Christian debt counseling, Christian mortgages, Christian car loans and now this? IMHO, just another ploy...... Nothing Christian about it, just sells well these days, or am I off the mark?

Just what is Christian debt relief anyways? I mean regardless, ya gotta "...give unto Caesar what is Caesar's." What the hell difference does being a Christian have to do with it, Right? You ain't off the mark...or Matthew, Luke, or John, either.

So whattya suppose is the VO's take on a $40 spot?

Ya know, I go to church almost every day and I have yet to receive a purchase order from the almighty for a voice over job.

At the 5:15 tonight at St. Michaels...no order!

Not him, the son the holy spirit...none of the apostles, the martyrs...man I must suck at this VO stuff to the high heavens!

But this guy gets to tie in the whole crew at hades pricing.

I must be praying wrong...I wonder if there's a book I could find....praying for voice overs...hmmm...

I guess I'd better not change my business cards to "Purrrr...fect Christian Voice Overs".

All right you guys!
enough already.

Skip the "Christian" part.
It's the ultra-low price as a selling point that's such a pain.

Why so worried? Are the voices as good as or BETTER than you?

"OH NO!!! The market will collapse because sub-standard voice overs are offering themselves at bargain basement prices. Pouvre moi".

What signals is the market getting? None. Zero impact.

How concerned am I about bad and/or cheap voice overs. Not in the least.

I certainly can't speak for my follow comedic cohorts, but I'm not taking a swipe at Christianity insomuch as I'm taking issue with the latest trend among many, so called, entrepreneurs who wrap themselves in The Shroud of Tourin in an attempt to make a fast and easy buck. I think we'll all agree it's downright nefarious and truly cheesy.

But what the hey. If it worked for Karl Rove, why not everyone else, right?

No "poor me" here. I lament the race to the bottom for the sake of people who are trying to get started. It lowers expectations all over and makes it hard for some talent to name a reasonable price. If clients think these "$60 deals" are standard, it makes it more difficult for freelancers to ask for what they're worth.

In the media section of a UK national newspaper the ad reads.

"Makes £200 per hour with your voice ...." That's around $300. Is it a job? No it's selling a course, a "how to become a voice over" course.

Wannabee reads this and works out that 8 hours per day, 5 days per week .....Well you can see where I'm heading.

For $500,000 per year it's got to be worth a try hasn't it?

A $40 job is the gross not the net, so how much would someone make on a $40 job?

How little is it is possible to charge? I know of a number of voice artists who have offered to voice free of charge in order to get experience and material for their demo's and they are still unable to get anything.

How are the bottom feeders effecting you're income? How many clients have said that they will go to Bottom Feeder Productions because they get the same quality for half the price? How many web sites have you visited where the price was low and the demo material was WOW?

The reality is that the bottom feeders are forcing producers to make the "flight to quality" and the Wannabees (the smart ones) see that it is not quite as easy as it looks to make a living. 95% of people launching themselves onto the voice over market will not make any money at all. Sorry to be the bearer of good news for established pro's.
