The set-up: My soon-to-be 19-year-old son really, really wants to go to Japan to teach English, at least for a summer.
Me: Dev! I forgot to tell you-- I met the most lovely man at the VOICE thing in Vegas. He's from England, but has lived in Japan for 20 years. He used to teach English when he first got there.
Devon: Really?
Me: Yes! And he's so nice. You should write him an email when you know when you're going. Maybe you guys can get together. I'll give you money so you can take him to a nice lunch! You're just going to love him. Funny, smart. Very talented. He's just wonderful! I really hope you get to meet him. What a delightful man! I just know you two would hit it off.
Devon: Mom.
Me: Yes?
Devon: You know I'm not gay, right?
Me: Oh. I guess I have to make a quick phone call, then. Sorry.
Devon: No prob. I should have told you sooner.
